Question Engine Removal '86 16V Euro Auto

Hi

I have just removed the engine on one of our S2s (auto) and a few problems along the way and wondered if any one had easy solutions.

The main problem was physically getting the engine out of the engine bay. The car has had recent new engine mounts so the engine had to be lifted quite high to get the lugs on the side of the block to clear the mounting covers/frames. In fact I couldn’t get the engine high enough to clear the mounts without the flywheel becoming jammed in the top of the bell housing, couldn’t pull the engine forward to clear the bell housing because engine was still trapped by engine mount covers/frames.

Tried to lift the engine high at the front to ‘tilt’ it out to no avail. Cam covers got caught behind the cross brace mounts. In the end I dropped the entire cross member to physically remove the engine mounts, and easy peasy out came the engine. (Did think about cutting the entire front of the car off, forward of the bulkhead)

I removed and replaced an engine previously on my first ‘Fat Pig’ with no problems at all, but it had old knackered, collapsed engine mounts.

Has anyone else had similar problems when removing engines from 928’s with new, and therefore relatively high, engine mounts?

The reason for the engine removal is to replace blowing exhaust gaskets, I believe its quite a common problem on the 16V engine. Just could not get to them in situ. Anyway, engine very clean now, much easier to service when out! Cambelt/idler/tensioner etc.and water pump change VERY easy with engine sat on a 45 gallon oil drum!

Engine gone back into car OK, but have problems removing air from the power steering. All pipe joints seem to be OK, no fluid leaking, but still have air in the system.

Regards to all

I had fun putting an engine into the bay with new mounts, and could see how removing it would have been interesting too. If you could removing or loosening the nuts top and bottom of the mounts would make is alot easier, though you would have to lower the rack to be able to get at the bottom nut.
