Warning

Well as you can see I’ve been keeping busy on taking care of the cosmetics. But what you can’t see is some of the minor electrical gremlins that I’ve addressed but I’ve covered most of those in other posts. This posting is about cosmetics and making my tired old paint look good before I’m forced to break down and have it re-sprayed.

As has been noted by some of you in my past thread installments the Shark’s skin was dull, a little oxidized and had a lot of swirl marks. Particularly bad were the doors and the finders. Not counting chips & scuffs the rest of the body isn’t in all that bad of shape and nothing I can’t live with until I save up for a descent paint job.

Anyway what you see is the results of a lot of elbow grease & sweat, buffing & waxing – then waxing & buffing again, every chance I had one finder and/or panel at a time. For the past week or so (an hour here a couple hours there), until I though my arm was going to fall off. Now some may ask why I didn’t use my new buffer? Well honestly it’s still kind of new to me & frankly I’m a little concerned about burning through the paint. So I only use it sparingly until my confidence is built up.

Anyway here’s the results.

Also as you can see I’ve been busy cleaning up under the hood/Bonnet too. I installed a new hood liner and used some degreaser or general cleaner where ever if felt safe.

Thoughts? I guess I'm just in need of a pat on the back after all that work () and am wondering if I'm being too cautious with the buffer?

Cheers,
Bret

SWWEEEEEET!

That looks nice, man. I can't see any need for a respray in these pics. That's some really nice detail work man.

I like the wheels too.

I got the same hood liner, I like it alot but I didn't use good glue so it's bubbling in a few places. I need to get in there and redo it.

Your car is so clean with no sunroof, BSMs or headlight rings, me likey.

Looks great, good job!

I need to do the same to my S4. The paint is faded and has some hazing in places. I'm considering buying a buffer polisher for the job, but have the same concerns about burning through the paint. My plan is to practice on my old pickup truck before I go at the S4.

Thanks Gents,

Don (TheDon007) made a great suggestion regarging getting used to the buffer. I have a local pick-your parts junk yard nearby where I work and am thinking about picking up a couple of used hoods or trunk lids to take home & work on to get my skill level up to par before I go too crazy on my Shark.

Talking to one of my MG buddies I should be able to pick up a couple of distressed hoods & trunk lids for an Andrew Jackson ($20). I'll swing by there tomorrow afternoon on my way home & see what I can find.

Hey Ed,

I know what your talking about most of the over the counter adhesives just don't cut the mustard. But 3M makes a pretty great product that seems pretty sweet.

It ain't cheap at $15-$17 for a 22 oz can. But it works.

Here's the information:
PN#7610A16 3M Aerosol Adhesive #80 Rubber and Vinyl, 22 Fluid oz. High-strength, resists temperatures to 200° F, and has excellent resistance to plasticizing oils. Bonds rubber (except EPDM), vinyl, and leather.

Here's where I ordered it. McMaster-Carr

Bret,
Looks like a job well done! Wish I could get mine looking that nice.
I've got the same hood liner to put on still, but have been hesitating over which glue to get. So you're putting your personal guarantee on the 3M #80?

Sure! the 3M #80 is down-right sticky so much so I got some on my hand and it won't come off.

Make sure you cover anything you don't want it to get on "before" you start. I used an old car cover to cover the engine bay & finders.

Anyway if you follow the instructions and spray both items (the hood and the hood liner) and wait 4 or 5 minutes for it to "tack-up" you should good to go.

You have my personal guarantee.

Very nice. Dark cars are hard to buff correctly. the machine I use is called a Cyclo.

I did my whole airplane with it. Some of the parts are red, and some polished. It works good but is pricey. I would offer to loan it to you, but I hate Poway(no offence intended).

Thats sweat Doc.

But for now I'll use what I got until I feel a little more comfortable before I consider an upgrade.

Shiny!

You need some painted center caps for those wheels to finish off the look.

Check your local Lowes for the Porter-Cable 7336SP, They are on clearance for $49.99-$89.99 (up to store on the price).

It is still $109 online,
