OK, I got to run it a bit more and I think I will get used to the sound. I have X-pipe, GT resonators and stock GT RM, it is a bit loud for my taste, but I guess there is no other option at this point. With the RMB it would be way loud for me. YMMV.

Andrew, how did you use the copper sealant? Just put it after around the outside or before on the inside pipe? The leak produces a chirping sound and is awfull...

I just did this with the Motorsport X with cats, stock S4 resonators (big) and the stock S4 muffler (heavy). It's sooooo much quieter than it was with GT resonators and an RMB.

Default A Better Clamp to Seal Exhaust

Sab,
I have Louie's X Pipe on my MY85. I could never get the t-Bolt clamps tight enough to seal, and the resonators used to move out on me. I recently removed the resonators and coated with the copper sealant and then used a Dynomax band exhaust clamp that I got from Summit. No more leaks and rock solid connection.

Here is link to the clamp I used:
http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...nresults=false.

I believe Walker makes these clamps and you should be able to get at almost any auto parts store also, the Walker part number is 33226 for a 2 1/2" lap joint connection.

I remember when Tom M ran his 87 with Louie X, GT resonators and RMB ... that was a little loud, sounded glorious in the tunnels though.

Up until last year I ran Louie X, S4 resonators and RMB, loved it but I wanted cats back in.

So I bought Motorsports X with cats, I really miss the 4K roar but it seems to be a good compromise.

I still have the GT rear muffler from my 91 but feel no need to add it to quieten down the noise.

Maybe something in between the two would be ideal?

Chris,

Are you suggesting that the Motorsports X with cats S-4 resonators and RMB is not too loud? That's the setup I'm considering. The other being X-pipe no cats s-4 resonator and a S4 or GT rear muffler.

Currently have the S-4 factory setup except for a RMB and love the sound. I don’t really want to go any louder if I can help it.

Who out there is running an X-pipe and RMB? Please let us know what you have in-between and a rough idea of sound level. I know it's primarily a subjective thing, but I’d still like to hear what others think.

Thanks

Glen,
Those are the clamps or similar that come with the MotorSport SLC X pipe system.

I basicaly put a 1/4" bead all around the pipe going in. Then when I slid it in and clamped it up, I took my finger and smoothed up the excess squeeze out. You need to let it cure for at least an hour but I'd recommend at least 4 hours and at least 24 hours befoer you let 'er rip.

But this also brings up the point about clamps. You really need to have a good clamp. DR sent simething like this one except it was a single bolt, not double like this pic.

Not for me, no, Motorsport cats and S4 resonators seem to be plenty, I could take a little more .... when you are crusing on the freeway not to much of a droan. I can take the all guns blazing when I am on it but cruising for hundreds of miles I would prefer not to be aware of the exhaust note.

For those who removed their cats, what did you do with the air pump? Did you remove the whole assembly or just remove the drive belt?

I just took a test ride with the new Motorsport crossovers with cats (stock from there back). It sounds NIICE! I haven't had it on the highway yet, but I really like it.

I'm going to go with a different clamping system as well, probably with that stuff Andrew mentions, I don't like the way these clamped up and I think I hear a little hissing from the back of one.

Very cool setup, sounds just a bit louder and a bit lower, but not too much from what I can tell.

I just got Porken's EZ-F'r in the mail today and my new chips are on the way. There will be much BWAAA on the Jersey shore this winter.

JHowell,
I'm just leaving the air pump tube open at the bottom, I've read that others have gone the gamut from just pulling the belt to removing the whole system. In either case they went with either electric fan or shorter belt for just the fan.
Check Tampas current thread about the air pump. I think the shorter belt is 21" if you want to run just your fan and disco the belt.

Roger indicated the sound was just right - remember that both the '87 and the '93 have the large resonators. I assume he has the OE ones on both of these cars. The small ones were only on cars from '88 through '91. Oh yes, and on the pre-87's. The '86 passenger side will fit the later cars, but not the driver's side (US!!!).

I'm not sure the X all by itself does much at all sound-wise.

I have a Motorsport SLC X pipe, and IIRC I gained roughly 15 more hp on the dyno. But my system is otherwise bone stock - just the X pipe - and I didn't notice much difference at all in the sound. Maybe the smallest little extra rasp, but nothing more.

Edit: I also have the new Motorsport cats. But I didn't expect any sound difference with those either - and didn't get any.

Quick Reply: Installed the X-Pipe - not too sure
