Default Power Steering Pump Makes Noise - RV

She certainly has morning sickness! We finally have some cold weather here in New Jersey, and my power steering has begun some serious moaning while cold. This occurs at almost any position of the steering wheel, with the loudest being at lock on either end. Fuids are fine, belts are fine, just had all that checked this morning. Any thoughts and/or suggestions? '82 US AT

Usually moaning is a sign of the pump cavitating, or having difficulty getting fluid input. Even though you may see enough fluid in the tank, I would check that the supply hose is not kinked or restricted in some way. I had this noise in a Disco once when the old hoses were soft, and the supply line got squashed by the battery!

When was the last fluid change, pump rebuild, and hose inspection?

Automatic trans fluid used?

btdt..

Check for steering rack leaks. Compress your steering rack boots by hand. If they contain any fluid the rack is leaking.

EDIT: and BTW... do not let the pump cavitate... it will get broken real soon.

Time to recondition the power steering pump. An easy do it yourself project. Kit with all seals etc costs about $US20. PM me and I'll send you the step by step instructions I put together when I did my 1990 S4.

My power steering pump has started to moan just a bit as well. Upon inspection, I have noticed some fluid seeping from the rear of the pump housing. No hose fittings are leaking, this is from the cover at the rear of the housing.

Dave,
I would be interested in some steering pump R&R instructions if you have them available for an OB.
