Second para of post 82 should be a giveaway, and third para of post 67 would leave no doubt. I am the father side. although I'm pretty androgynous about it.

Gotcha!

Although I generally don't believe everything I read, some personal investigation is often warranted.

BTW, my diagnostic skills with regard to 'which parent' would be much better in person, or even give me a handwriting specimen!

Best!

Our rule with him is any speeding ticket 15 mph and over the limit the car gets sold- no questions. It was going to be any speeding ticket but if he got one for 7 over and was going with traffic I think that would be a bit harsh.

When both of my kids got their driving licenses we had them sign a contract with us. Contract included a un-dated letter to the state DMV voluntarly giving up their license. The contract stated NO driving under the influence of anything! If caught I would date and mail the letter. Any accidents and they payed for the increase in insurance. They had to pay for all gas, 1/2 of the insurance increase and all repairs that were not safety related. I paid for all safety related repairs, IE tires, brakes, lights, wipers, etc. The son was very inventive about what was safety related. To this day i still don't know how I ended up paying for new wheels?????

Hey Jim, if the car has no wheels it's not safe We're chipping in a fair amount for the operation of the car. I could make him quit band, which sucks up a lot of hours (4pm until 9pm rehersing for Peter Pan) and get a job to pay for the car, but what's the point in that? I'd rather have him learning advanced music theory and practice than flipping spit-burgers(that's what I serverd when I was a kid).

TJS, don't take this the wrong way, but from your post, I can tell you that you are nothing like my son. You may be a bit like I was in my youth, but nothing remotely like my kids are. They cringe when I tell stories of my growing up in the 60s in SoCal. I had a beater Studebaker with a V8 and overdrive that I managed to wreck twice, and neither was my fault! Got a VW and drove that until I joined the army and was shipped off to far-away places.

I had a disastrious late childhood, but I don't blame anyone else for it. We all live our lives, and eventually stand-up on our own. It took me through boot camp to finally shape up, my son seems to have accomplished it at 16. In many ways, he's more mature than I am now. Which, for anyone that knows me isn't too great a feat.

Doc, I agree, I've met your son and he seems like a very mature young man. My kids were working part time and the requirement was that they also had to maintain their grades. Guess I forgot to mention that.

Oh, and he had perfectly good wheels that were safe, I just got bamboozled. But the final outcome is both are GREAT kids!

I resurected this thread to let everyone know that we bought a truck. It is after all, Texas, so we flelt like city-folk without one. So, Joe will be safely ensconced in a 2001 Dodge 1500 with airbags, and lots of mass. the Porsche will be for special occasions.

Doc,
All things considered... sounds like a good plan. A truck is a natural where you live
(a homeowner NEEDS a truck, & kiddos can help with one).

shark = makes the special occasion even better.

It's worh the peace of mind.

I was most concerned what envious school kids would do when no one was looking, not to mention how a seasoned driver may swap the police in the case of an accident, reguardless of who was at fault.

2001 Dodge parts are easier to get, and the ins preminum must look better too!
