Jesse......"The cam covers are VERY simple. " Actually not true for the 85-86 32 valve. Porsche on the first 32 valve engines opted to have the cam cover bolts screw into the head of another bolt which screws into the head. Far far too often when you start unscrewing the cam cover bolt it breaks off the head of the bolt leaving the remains stuck in the cylinder head. If on the bottom row there is usually no way to get out the broken bolt. And unfortunately it is nearly impossible to remove the 85-86 cylinder head with the engine in the car has head studs instead of head bolts. So now the engine must come out of the car...Customers who started out with a small oil leak have often ended up spending a couple thousand dollars to R and R the engine. Plus the odd bolts with threaded holes in the bolt are no longer made...and 87 > cam cover bolts really do not work correctly. I strongly advise not touching those cam cover bolts unless you really have to...1987 > is no problem just the 85-86 "prototype" engine tested in the 85-86 USA cars before major revisions for the world wide use of the S-4 engine in 1987.

That's interesting. I have done 3 sets of the 85-86 cam covers. I figured they were just as easy as the others..... but they just look different.

Quite possibly the nicest cam tower I have done yet. Candy Red, with machined and polished letters .....

Jim, I certainly agree on the 'prototype' designation for the 85-85 32v. But, could you clarify why the 87+ cam cover bolts don't work well as a retrofit? I see that the cam covers have different part numbers than 87. Is it because the covers aren't cast to accept the pressure gaskets and thrust washers?

I'd be interested in the answer to Worf's question. I'll be going down this road in the near future and would like to have parts on hand prior to doing the job.

Thanks.

I wish this were posted before I had mine Powder Coated. Your work looks so much better than mine came out. The red gloss one's are so nice they make me want to go to the fair and get a candy apple.

My covers should either be done or almost done. I asked Jesse for some updates/pics, but he said he got the flu over the weekend. So you probably own't hear much from him today. I asked for the textured finish in black. Eager to see the results.
