If you could ask the designers of the 928 ONE question...

so the germans didn't drive during Oktoberfest? guess that makes sense...
Well... Did American cars have cupholders in the early 70s (when they designed the 928)? I don't think so...
Also remember that in the early 70ies, overseas travel was not as common as today. I suspect that most people who worked on the 928 had never been to the US and had no idea what it was like, how cars were used differently, or how expectations were different. Apart from that expectations have changed since, I doubt they did the kind of marketing research that companies do today.
For all I know (and have been told by insiders), they tried to build the best car they could imagine at the time...

My question[s] would be - what's up with the interior materials? couldn't they figure out that those get destroyed after coming into contract with (surprise, surprise!) sun? especially after, say, 10 years of production?

I am starting to become concerned that, should this come to pass, it will become a bash and bitch session instead of a discovery session about the 928.
Imagine the knowledge he has to offer about the Weissach axle, the setting aside of the 928 project because of OPEC, the decision to use the 928 heads and half-block on the 944, the 4-door 928, the decision to stop development on the carburated manifold and go with K-Jet, the decision to use independant dual a-arms and not McPherson struts and a bunch of amazing and excellent decisions thay came to at a very early time - far ahead of other manufacturers.
We will have maybe an hour or two with this guy (if this happens at all). I don;t want to waste it bitching about cup holders or plywood fuse panel covers.
Just my .02
