Another easy one... They foresaw that buyers of vehicles in that price class would expect more luxury features in the coming years, so they had to figure out ways to integrate those features. But at the time they did not have those compact, reliable HAVC systems we see on today's cars, so they had to invent a system that did all the luxury functions with the meand of the time. Similar things are true for features other than the HVAC.
The weight overall lis not that bad - it might have been a lot for a sports car at the time, but today it would not be considered outrageious, I think. But they focused on weight balance, which is probably part of why the 928 handles so well - no?
