Default Do All Superchargers Have The Whine?

I'm not sure I like the metallic whine of a supercharger. It obscures the nice V8 rumble. Do they all have this feature?

The Whine is a function of the Helical-cut gears/rotors. All SC's will have that to some extent.

If you run a crossover exhaust with cats you will have plenty of that V8 sound.

Autorotors (DR's kit) seem to be the quietest of the supercharers.

On my TS, you don't hear the whine much at idle and as long as you stay out of boost, you don't hear it much under accelleration either. Jump on it, though, and you'll hear that vvvvvvvVVVVVVVVV! After a while, that sound become addictive!

Bigs,

I imagine it sounds better from the driver's seat than from outside, sitting next to it at a light .

How loud the whine is depends on who is in the passenger's seat.

The wine is not terrible at all. Tim gave me the v2 sq which is remarkably quiet. The only wine I really hear is from an occasional stoplight opponent. Get one with helical rather than straight cut gears, and you will be fine.

Bigs, you have to realize the ones you have been listening to have been the V1-T and the V7-Ysi, both very noisy. The V2-SQ is much quieter and one is sitting right here on the shelf...just for you!

Hans, Rotrex superchargers do have a planetary gear set. It's a completely different design but they are proving themselves rapidly. The new Ruf Caymen has one installed and puts out 440hp.
I have been considering replacing the factory air pump with a Rotrex on an early 928. They are not considerably different in price than standard belt driven superchargers but the size makes them quite attractive.

I've not listened closely to any supercharged 928s, but my dad had a supercharged Buick Riviera and you couldn't hear that supercharger at all unless you really pushed it, in which case you don't really mind

It must be a function of design; whether the designer thinks you want to hear it or not.
