Default Advice needed (low oil level - RV)

Ok, so I've had my 928 a few days now and love it. I haven't driven the car since the 300 mile drive home from picking it up so decided it would be a good idea to check oil and water levels today. Water was fine but there appeared to be no oil in the car (according to the dipstick). I've now filled up the car with oil but it took almost 4 litres!.

Now it doesn't smoke from the exhaust so either it hasn't had any oil in it since picking it up or it's leaking somewhere. Which leads me to my next point......

I've noticed a bit of oil around the filler cap, the manifold next to it, distributor cap and on the bonnet underneath (almost like oil has been forced out somewhere). The oil filler cap was not on tight so I've ensured that it is now. I've attached a couple of pics of the area (I have cleaned up the top of the oil filler cap as it was covered in oil).

I've also driven the car today without issue and it doesn't seem to be leaking any oil either. Tommorow morning I'll check the oil level again. Has anyone else had this issue?

Did you check the oil level BEFORE you drove it home?

No and I wish I did with hindsight. I picked the car up from a garage and was assured that the car had just been serviced. Then again I don't think I would of made it 300 miles with no oil in the car.

No oil level warning light? Mine went off the other day right at one quart low. That would concern me.

Sorry about that. It's a 1982 928s as well.
