2007 997 turbo vs. 928 top view
I was just looking at the top view of the 2007 997 turbo tiptronic in car and driver .com and I thought of how similar it looks to the 928. Almost 30 years later and it has so many similarities still to their strongest asset.

The front headlights, the slight dip in the bodywork just before them, the hood lines, the curvature in the front bumper, the shape of the roof, even some rear end looks, the fenders to at least the GTS, there are alot of shared lines there.

Not sure if they look the same but if you ever look at the dimensions and weight of the 928 in comparison to the 996 and 997 you'll note how similar they are. Then if you compare the dimensions and weight of the Cayman vs the 993 and earlier cars you'll note how similar they are. Porsche has essentially accomplished what they wanted to achieve only they reversed it by making the 911 their upmarket car and making the Cayman their less expensive "911". It's hard to argue that the newer 911's are GT cars and the Cayman is more of a smaller sports car (although very refined).

Good points to all people who replied-
I think that because they couldnt sell the 928 to the masses by the 90's, they just took the best of the 928 that they knew they could sell to the porsche-aholics, put it on the 997 and left alone the biggest gripe of the "die hards" which was the rear engine being untouched, and waaaa-Laaaaa! A 911 that is as close to a 928 without being one.
There is simply too many similarities to ignore. The 911 has been a GT for a while now and it wasn't when the 928 hit the streets, which has always been a GT. (grand tourer)

Perhaps the biggest obstacle to larger sales volume was the price of the 928. The last 928, sold 13 years ago now, sold in dollars for about what a 997 sels for today. Figure in the time value of the money and you are more than double over the same 13 years, suggesting that a brand new 928 would be in the $200k range new today. Guess what... There aren't many mass-market $200k cars around today.
I think that it is fun to look at how the 'newer' Pcars mimic a lot of the styling cues we are familiar with on the 928. But they are vastly different under the skin. My S4 was a dated technology the day it was built. And I would like to have a 997tt or even a Cayenne tt or both. Either would be a very worthy alternative to the 928. I just can't find one for anywhere near the cost of the 928. Call me frugal...

It is ironic how the 928 was labeled "fat and lazy" or too big & comfortable.....but the new 997's weigh about the same as the 928 & are the same size with a water cooled engine (in the wrong end)...it just go to show the 928 was a better car & Porsche basically turned the 911 into one!
