Default SoCal (OC) Tire shops?

It isn't pressing, tires are fine right now, but I am getting overall more tire conscious and trying to leave my cheap old Pep Boys habits behind, and need to find a good Tire shop in the OC.

Greg has tire stuff in his shop, but I kinda doubt he wants to do my other cars, and I like to settle on one place for all the tire and wheel issues like mounting, balancing and maybe alignment.

TireRack.com list of installers has a place called Zuby's in Garden Grove with all 5 star ratings, does anybody here have experience with them?
This is from the TireRack.com description. Pricey, between $20 and $35 a tire, but no other complaints, and they are a Goodyear dealer.

Mounting Equipment: Hunter TC3500 State-of-the-Art Runflat capable rimclamp
Balancing Equipment: Hunter GSP9712 State-of-the-Art Roadforce balancer

I use Allen tire, 1725 Superior (the corner of Superior and 17th) in Costa Mesa. 949-646-5236. The manager is Denny, who is a straight shooter. I usually buy from Tire Rack and schlep them over there, and their guys will dismount the old, mount and balance the new, and dispose of the old for $20 per wheel. Last time Denny said he'd match Tire Rack + shipping if he could get the size and brand I wanted, so I may go that way next time. May be a hike for you from Orange, but you can always high-speed test the new rubber on that stretch of the 55 south of the 73......

Americas tire for me. I use the one on Marguerite and Avery prkwy. They have always been within 5 dollars of tire rack and done the work immmediately. Great guys. Have bought several sets of tires through them.

I was always told to baby the tires for the first day or two until all the tire mounting goop is dry so they don't slip. Takes some fun out of new tires, but its an old habit.

My wife works near Bristol and Jamboree, so thats not that far if I have her drop it, but wow Newport sure can be a SLOW street.

I wonder if they would have been able to match that $89 special price TireRack had on the Goodyears?

I have an Americas Tire just down the street, and used them a car or so ago, but at the time nobody could come close to the value of the Futura GT from Pep Boys, some of the best tires I have ever owned, but discontinued now, and Pep Boys is pep boys a PITA and requiring supervision.

I feel like I am going to become this total Porsche turd checking the model numbers of the tire mounting equipment etc. Asking about the calibration on their torque wrenches.

I don't ask about their torque wrench calibration, I just drive home carefully and then re-torque them properly myself.

Who- me? Compulsive? No.....

As far as skipping the traffic on Newport, just take the 55S to the first light at 19th, and turn right. Go west to Anaheim St, turn left, takes you right to the tire place, skipping all the crap on Newport Blvd.

I shopped around for my Mich Pilots, and found that the out-the-door cost of them from Costco was as good as the cost of getting them from Tire Rack, then schlepping them to a local tire store and paying for the mount & Balance and road hazard warranty there. The Costco guys use a no-contact mounting machine, and they were happy to use my balancer diameter/offset numbers to allow the one-shot use of the stick-on weights. I do bring the old rims in off the car and remount them myself with my own torque wrench so that part about the install is not a risk. Plus, carrying the rims in myself makes the service a LOT faster-- they go to work on them right away rather than sitting in line for the lift space. I do have to order the tires, but it only takes them a couple business days to get them. I can do that part by phone. Plus I get those cute little green caps on them indicating a Nitrogen fill.

If Costco has a tire I want, they are a place I would like to try, but their selection is often limited. Web site says they will ONLY put on the factory original size tire, which they are listing as a 195 for my Mustang for some reason. I'll just stop by, eh, maybe after xmas, and check the tires they have.

Benefit of N2 is something about moisture isn't it?

I've used Glenn's Alignment in Costa Mesa -- they did a decent job, but were a little snooty and pricey.

I've since used Harbour Tire Pros in Huntington Beach at the corner Bolsa Chica and Warner. They've been there FOREVER and they do a fantastic job. Their prices are very competitive. Dan's the guy to talk to. I think the phone is (714) 840-1864. I think they use a Hunter for the alignments...

Web site may not indicate the actual conditions at the store. My fronts are takeoffs from a 996C2, and came with 205's. I upped them to 225's and the Costco guys never said a word. If the Mustang has a rim that's too narrow for the tire yo are trying to fit, they might say something. You want them to I think. But on your 928 that came with 225's on 7" wide wheels, you won't see much if any advantage in looks or handling with much more tire underneath anyway.

One thing that Costco won't do is match prices on closeouts from places like Tire Rack. TR has those Goodyears on cheapy special, kind of hard to beat if you are looking for cheap 16" tires these days. Do some searches and find some folks who were less than impressed with them. High noise levels and early deterioration of handling seemed to be the biggest gripes. Might be OK for a weekend driver, but the noise would get to me in a hurry. Thay are cheap though, so maybe you can overlook the noise and deterioration of handling concerns OK.

The benefit of N2 is definitely moisture. Fill up with air that's been through the dessicant drier to -40 dew point, and you should be OK. Doesn't have the same !Bling! as the little green valve caps you get with the N2 fillup.

What I liked about the Goodyear GSC D3 is that its outstanding in wet, and one of the best dry, just zero on the snow. I'd say I have maybe a good 2 years on the Kumho tires on the 928, but both of our other cars have 80k mile tires on them (means nothing except for warranty) and while the tread is good, the tires are 7 years old on my Mustang, so its the test bunny.

Noisy seems to be the story with a LOT of modern tires. Someone mentioned the Sumitomo HTR in another thread and thats a tire that drove some people nuts, plus it apparently gets worse over time.

Middle of next week I will check out some of these places, Thanks everybody.

I've used discounttire/tirerack and as everyone says schleped to a shop for install - this one is Tucker Tire on Forbes road and Crown Valley right off the 5 fwy (Laguna Niguel) for the past 12 years. They have worked out well.

You can also get a good breakfast burrito or burger and fried zucchini at A's burger around the corner on Camino Capistrano and Avery if you wanted to know.

Some shops are OK with having TireRack etc. ship directly to them, and just give you a call when they arrive.

I did some shopping at Sears and took a look at the Hunter 400, WoW.
