Is it safe to use fuel injector cleaner in my 928?
#16
I read somewhere that Techron is the ONLY fuel additive approved for use by PORSCHE. I think it was a tech service bulletin, but I can't find it now. The only restriction was no more than two bottles during each oil change interval.

Hi,
it is a myth that the engine's oil must be changed after using a fuel system cleaner such as Techron
as stated on the label
This can be proven by studying Used Oil Analysis (UOA) results (see those for my 928 in here)
Porsche's Technical Bulletin dated December 6 1985 (heck 21 years ago) recommends the use of Techron as follows;
Initially use 20 ounces to a full tank run to half full then refill the tank and repeat 2 more times
Then,
"To keep injectors clean, we recommend 20 ounces after 5 tank refills. However, never more than 20 ounces per 3000 miles"
Techron is sold under various names under Patent and was the first serious fuel system cleaner.
In particular it has proven to be excellent in cleaning and maintaining valve heads. I first become involved with this issue in 1975 (GM - Milton) when the durability of emission controls was beoing evaluated
Techron is a truely excellent product and is still a leader today
I worked for Chevron for some years in the 1960s when living in Copenhagen, Denmark
Regards

Just want to be clear on this, maybe the coffee isn't working this morning but I'm confused and don't want to overdose my little 928!

Excellent question. I was just about ot ask the same thing my self. BTW, sweet ride sfierle, looks familiar. Just cant place it though
Amen to Chevron and Techron. I have been using it exclusivly for many years in all my cars. Very good stuff.
So just to recap, the best products to use are StaBil, Jectron, or Ventil Sauber??
About twice a year??

Anyway, that's how I read it.

Hello,
I'll clear it up - the Bulletin (2440/8510) says;
STARTS
Partially restricted fuel injectors can be cleaned through the following procedure and material:
1 - Fill up fuel tank
2 - Pour 20 ounces of "Techron" into the fuel tank
Note: Techron is marketed by Chrevon
3 - The car should be driven until the fuel tank is half empty
4 - Refill the fuel tank
5 - This procedure as outlined from point 1 to 4 should be repaeted 2 additional times
6 - To keep injectors clean, we recommend adding 20 ounces of Techron after 5 fuel tank refills. However, never more than 20 ounces per 3000 miles
ENDS
As I understand it, the inital cleaning is not a maintenace dose as stated in 6) above
Remember that Techron is a complex fuel system cleaner and not only an "injector" cleaner

I was doing something with acetone once, I forget what, but I didn't want to leave the bottle open so I just poured some in a plastic cup, and it dissolved the bottom of the cup after a few minutes.
I didn't see anything about cleaning injectors on this bottle, just improves performance.

Techron has always worked well for me. Acetone aids in vaporization by stirring up the molecules in fuel. It can also be harmfull if not used in proper ratios. As noted by Danglerb it melts plastic. There is a lot of plastic in our fuel systems.

Thanks, Doug, but I'm still confused.
20 oz into a full tank, drive to half and put in another 20, drive again to half and put in another 20 - assuming 250 miles in half a tank that makes 60 ounces at 500 miles.
And further assuming, for the sake of arithmetical simplicity, a 20 gallon tank, the concentration is 1oz/gal for the first 250 miles, then 1.5oz/gal for the second 250 miles and then 1.75oz/gal for the third iteration.
And, assuming 500 miles per tank, 20 oz every fifth tank means 20 oz/2500 miles.
I admit I'm math challenged. What am I not seeing?
Confused,
Will

Hi Will,
yes it is all a little confusing - I just played the song but did'nt write the music!
Go off the instructions on the container or alternatively, I would do this;
INITIALLY
1 - Fill tank and add 20 ounces of Techron (or ??) concentrate
2 - Run car for at least 120 miles in one trip/one day
3 - When fuel tank reaches 1/4 full - refill
4 - Add another 20 ounces of Techron concentrate and refill tank again when at about 1/4 full mark
MAINTENANCE
5 - Use 20 ounces of Techron again at 3000 to 5000 miles intervals
However, modern fuels do have better detergency media than even a decade ago so this type of treatment may be bordering on unnecessary
Whilst no negative result has been shown in Used Oil Analysis, I always do mine in the period leading up to an oil change or immediately before

Interesting - I had always felt that it was better to use Techron during short-trip driving, rather than on a long trip. This gives the injectors numerous "heat soak" cycles with the cleaner in the injectors.
Any comments on the difference? Damage to the fuel system over the longer dwell time? Better cleaning with heat soak cycles?

Always good to hear from Wally!
I've had good luck clearing a partial clog with a big overdose of Lucas product, and good luck with some removal of buildup from the back of the valves with ventil-sauber from lubrimoly. YMMV
