Default Porsche 928 Motronic and Volvo involvement.

I might be pushing my luck by posting a Volvo related question in this newsgroup, but I would like to know if somebody knows anything about the Porsche engineers involvement in developing the B6304 6cyl engine found in my Volvo 960 1991 model.

I found the rennlist forum while seraching for serial communication between the Motronic and a PC.

If I someday manage to communicate with my Motronic 1.8 unit, it will reply the following part number and bosch number:
Part number: 92861812411
Bosch number: 0 227 400 035

As far as I can tell this belongs to Porsche 928, and is possibly left overs from
the Porsche engineers.

It could also have been done on purpose if the serial communication is compatible with equipment used on Porsche 928.

I have had some response on Personal Messages, but I am currently not able to read these as I have not enough posts on this forum.

Regards,

rkam

Porsche's Weissach research center did sub contract development for Volvo and was involved in developing some Volvo 6 cylinder engine in mid eighties. Not sure if it was as you're asking though. Porsche studied possibility to use Volvo's six in 968 IIRR. Also 928 S4 and other 32V 928 engines use same distributor cap design as some Volvo 4 cylinder engines, the ones which have distributor at clutch end of engine.

928 618 124 11 is '87 S4 EZK ignition control unit.

Thank you for your quick reply.

The mid eighties development seem to fit this Volvo model well.
The first 960 with this engine was delivered in 1990.

Hopefully the decision not to use this engine in Porsche was not because it was considered to be a poor engine.

The EZK ignition control unit does not look very much like the Motronic 1.8.
The M1.8 is a combined fuel and ignition control unit with direct control
over separate ignition coils mounted directly above every spark plugs.

Why these Porsche numbers is found in the code still puzzles me.
