Thanks for the welcome everyone. I'll make an effort to become a member, sounds like I couldnt go wrong their.
Vilhuer, I'll grab the option code for my car, that should let you know about the extras on the car.
Just recently had a Frenzy gathering/run in country Victoria (AUS), very good day. Found that the left hand rear tyre had distorted badly. Um.. what was the speed limit again??
Goodspeed928, are your freinds in Victoria at all?
Bye for now
Regards,
Glenn

Vilhuer asked about the option codes for my '81
Built 01/051981
R4R4 Grand Prix White
DX Brown L'ette
249 Automatic Trans
261 Electric Left Hand S (I'm yet to find out what this is)
282 Rear Visors
418 Protective Side Moulds
423 Cassette Holder
650 Electric Sliding Roof
That info was from Porsche Cars Australia, no mention of 'S' spoilers so I presume they were fitted after build.

Thank you for the codes. Every now and then S spoiler option on 4.5L is mentioned and so far there hasn't been any proof it ever existed other than NA Competition Package. One way to tell if car had S spoilers from factory is to look rear side windows. Their seal is different type ans also class is different. Class shape is exact same but black area at edge of class is wide enough that it is visible even when spoiler seal version is used.
261 is passenger side mirror electric plain. Other side mirror was optional extra in early ROWs.

Well hows this.
After owning the car for a couple of weeks, I closed the doors with the keys in the ignition, walked off, came back to find that the car locked itself. With no spare keys at the time, the only less damaging less expensive way to get in was to ................ well i wont say what I did exactly but when I purchased the new seal I had to buy the different rear spoilerseal.
I have read abouth these Competition Package cars and thought thats what I have.
Do you have a list of equipment that hese cars were fitted with. Like brakes and suspension.
Can it be traced back from the VIN Number??
Cheers

Hello everyone. I thought I'd give you update of what I've been up to on my 9-2-8 since I last posted on this thread.
Electrical fixes - All earth points were refinished. Had all the contact points sharpened up. Interior lights all now work. Even the door/hatch switches. Had 1 headlight that was dull, found that it was just an earth so I solved that by running a new earth lead that follows the factory loom around to the front left earth point near the headlight motor ( I even used the factory color for the wire
). Checked all the A/C and Heater Fan circuits. Blower Fan relay shot - replaced. All A/C circuit is fine just needs gas. Under the centre console I have fixed all the fibre optic leads for lighting the heater control and centre vent. Re aimed all the front driving light, head light and fog lights. Now I can see further ahead of me, got to keep your eyes out for Kangaroos at night.
Suspension fixes - New rear shocks fitted, front wheel bearings adjusted, 4 new tryres, ride height adjusted and a 4wheel alighnment job carried out. Felt like a new car after this was done. Rear CV Joint boots replaced.
Engine fixes - Not much here, just inspection on hoses and general tightness of things. I did go over the sump bolts, they were a little loose. Accelerator cable needed adjusting, wasnt getting full throttle when floored. Exhaust system got tossed out from the manifolds back to the rear wheels and replaced with a free flowing Y section and high flow muffler. It's not a factory replacement, but it looks neat and has made quite a bit of difference in throttle response, also sounds terriffic at 5000RPM and above. Cheap HP gain. Heater valve replaced, leaking vacume. I feel I need to get on a Dyno to check fuel mixtures. The Timing I've checked but it's difficult to see the pointer behind the plastic TB cover. I gave it a little more advance(about 4*) seems a little more enthusiastic. Timing belt will be done by the end of first year ownership, looks fine to me at the moment, it's been changed twice in it's life. Last change in 2002.
Trans fixes - Had this serviced recently, new fluid and the throttle cable/kickdown cable recalibrated. It's perfect, no metal in pan, shifts firmly enough and doesnt leak.
Body and Trim fixes - I am forever cleaning this car, its like i'm obsessed.
Glenn's fixes - When I need a fix, I just get in and drive it. It's a great car to drive. Where I live is quite open in all directions so I get to use the cars ability quite often. Although it's limits are still far beyond mine I still get around pretty fast. It's also great fun to work on, I guess because it's so clean.
I still have alot to learn about my 9-2-8, and alot more reading on the Rennlist (Thanks Andrew
), so I'll check back soon and let you know what we are up too.
Have a great day.

Damn,
You've done a lot of work in a short time. Those suspension fixes/adjustments are in my near future and I can't wait. Got all the parts (I think) just need the time.
I'm jealous of the roads that are 'open in all directions'. There was a video on You Tube of an S4 driving around town and every time the driver got on the gas and you heard the revs go up, he had to hit the brakes. A little longer, back on the brakes, a little higher, back on the brakes (I started laughing at this point). Finally he lets it out for maybe 20 seconds on a longer open road, then it's back into town. That's what my life is like every day! I've got my car tuned up pretty well, but never had it north of 80 mph!
Anyway, thanks for the update, congrats and Good luck!

Good work, GRTWHT! When these cars are tuned up, cleaned up, and running smoothly, it's amazing at how modern they feel despite their age. You must be lovin' it!
NJSharkFan-- C'mon, man! Never "north of 80mph"? Your mother doesn't read Rennlist...does she?!

Plus, that would be um illegal, and stuff
.
Yeh guys it really does fell better and newer than any other car I've owned or driven.
Sounds like alot of work has been done since August 2006 when I bought the car but time goes so quick that I almost forget what I've done to it. I keep a log now. I guess If I didnt do these things I couldnt drive it like it's supposed to be driven, plus I plan on keeping the car forever. I'm lucky it's been looked after. I probably picked it up before it got neglected hey.
Hey NJSharkFan If you have never had the car north of 80MPH before..... you are missing out. The car loves to cruise at this speed.
You know, the car seems to like the lengthy 80MPH cruises (say for 10minutes or more). The temperatures all seem to sit well (even @ 120MPH on a 105*F day, I had trouble that day but not the car), and you get really comfortable too. The response from the engine is sharp from their on. Yes their are cars out their now that will do the same speeds, but would they hold it for long periods at 26 years of age?
I should do a short clip of my 'normal' run to work (about 25 miles) and stick it on youtube
Thanks for the link to the spare Keys Pfunde
Thanks for the chat, catch you later.
