Are you sure that you have gas in the tank?

Don't you mean "had"........it's all over my hands, arms, and ground now. Actually, after I got the pump out and threw it in the yard, I hooked up the wires in reverse, and then correct polarity, and it works now. I guess it was just jammed. It will go back in tomorrow.

I finally got the correct size o-ring for the thermostat (I think), so it better fire up and roll or else.....

Hi

Jkelly Great news that the pump works

What page of the WSM teaches you to do that

Fingers crossed for "turning the key time"

The REASON why the fuel pump relay was jumped is PROBABLY that the LH Brain was failing and lost the ability to trigger the fuel pump relay...Having the pump run with the ignition is NOT a vey good idea if the car has or developes a leaky injector and some one leaves the ignition on like ti hear the radio, trouble shoot electrical, installing a radio etc. ....it can fill a cylinder with fuel and hydrolic the engine when you start it...bending the rod ,splitting a cylinder, blowing out the head gasket...

The pump only runs for a few seconds when the ignition is first turned on, but the relay is jumpered at the panel. After my next project (fuel lines, vacuum lines), I'll work on the fuse/relay panel to see what is going on.

Thanks for hanging in there with me Marton.
The WSM teaches us?

I came across the reverse polarity trick several times while doing research on new fuel pumps. The pump worked yesterday after reversing polarity, then today as I was getting ready to hook up the gas lines I thought I'd better try it one more time just to make sure............sure enough, it didn't run.
I went out to my gravel drive and repeatedly threw it at the ground thinking I would have to buy another one anyway. This clear gel-like stuff came out and it looked like half-dried glue or congealed gas or frozen gas; if that is possible, although it isn't freezing here today. Anyway, I tested it again and it worked just fine . Even though it is all beat up looking now, I installed it and ran the car for awhile and watched for leaks. Those pumps are very tough!

Anybody have any idea what the gel stuff could have been? old gas from sitting for the past 1 1/2 months?

P.S. The thermostat housing isn't leaking (yet) either. I think it is time for a test drive!

Go for it.

Nothing that I care to put into writing.

Sounds like you cleaned out the bottom of the gas tank by the usual technique of spraying it over yourself so hopefully no more gel problems.

Just to be on the safe side, I did drain quite a bit of gas when the fuel pump went back in and then filled er up during the drive.

It's good to be back on the road. Thanks everyone for the help!

Hey John,
Way to go. How did this repair go over with the SO? My wife made me swear to never do another gas tank anywhere near the house. I swear, it took me 2 weeks to get the gas smell off my hands and arms. And, yes, I wore gloves. Gas seems to have a way to get everywhere.

Good luck

Thanks Frank

She only complained twice and it was gentle complaints. I had it all over my hands and arms too, even after scrubbing them good, so I resorted to soaking in the bathtub . That works better than anything.
