Default issues with irregular fan speed

My problem is irregular cooling fan speeds. When starting the cool engine the fans operate normally at low rpm and the cooling flaps remain closed. Once the engine reaches the half way mark on the temperature gauge the fans run at full speed and the flaps open as expected. However after a minute the flaps close and the fans rpm rate decreases. This process of speeding up and slowing down as the flaps open and close continues throughout the engine running. I'm a bit concerned, as once the engine has warmed up the guage indicatioin engine temperature sits at the 3/4 mark. To me I would think that my car is running too hot. However as many members or Rennlist have pointed out on another subject that the oil needle is normally pegged at 5 while the car is moving. So if someone could shed some light on if my car is running too hot and if my fans are functioning correctly I would greatly appreciate it.

Try pulling fuse #23 when the flaps are open. Airflow will not be interupted for cooling process. If you still have erratic fan speed there could be a malfunctioning final stage or fan control unit. How old is your thermostsat ?
