Fuel & Fuel Expansion tank compatibility, '79
Fuel vapors have reared their ugly heads, and my wrench says I need to replace the the fuel expansion tank to cure it. My original PPI mechanic noted that there were some cracks forming in the fuel tank itself that would need to be replaced at some point.
I've located a tank and expansion tank for an '85. Will they fit in my '79? I usually look in the 928 Int. catalog to see how they classify things by year, and in this case it's confusing. They have no fuel expansion tank (only coolant), and *new* fuel tanks are for all years, whereas used ones are only '80-'95. To me, this suggests that there's something about the used >= '80 tanks they have on hand have something about them that interferes with <'80, whereas the new ones are universal. Will the used '85 give me a problem? Are fuel expansion tanks NLA, or called something else?

Sorry I don't know about the early applications, BUT I do have a '78 that I use for parts. If you still find yourself in need of a gas tank just email me. Also, my '78 doesn't have a charcoal canister or expansion tank, it vents (via a hard line) right into the air. (Oh the simplicity of the older models!!!)
Good luck on your repair!!

late gas tanks fit all cars ,78-79 tanks will not work for 1980> . It is more likely that your fuel pressure accumulator is leaking. The liquid fuel overflow reservoir above the right rear wheel is something which seldom fails. And all USA cars have sealed fuel systems....they inhale but never exhale.

Hey Bronto,
Man check the seal to the sending unit on the top of the tank first! Mine was leaking and filling the depression on top of the tank with gas. The solution was a new seal that cost just a few $$$. I have had two 79s and both had this same problem. I completely removed and r&r'd the gas tank in my 79 in a single weekend. You can get to the sending unit through the hatch.
Good Luck

Confirmation, guys. It is the Fuel Expansion Tank. Although he says he understands why Jim would think he meant the accumulator; but he pointed it out to me. This is a long plastic tank mounted inside the rear passenger side wheel well. The crack is at the forward mounting point for this tank.
So will an '85 fit in my '79?

The only difference in the later model tanks is a metal tab on the filler neck for attaching to the body. The OB's have nothing to connect to the tab, but it will not interfere with the mounting. BTW the tab on the later models gives stability to the neck and helps get the tank properly aligned.
