Porken

The rear fixings fasten on to the bolts that fasten the bumper shocks to the body - hence the C shaped plate.

I can't help thinking that the factory hitch wouldn't be hard to fabricate once the dimensions were known.

Who knows where the hitch receiver locates - below the rear pu or does a notch have to be cut out of the base of the rear pu ?

Seems to me that a "UK" style one piece hitch like this could be fitted with just two holes through the PU - just bolt/unbolt as needed.

Watling towbars in the UK do a 928 specific towbar for £270 about $500US plus shipping - If enough people wanted them I would guess they would entertain a group buy and maybe a discount. No idea what it looks like but I know a man who does.

Thanks...not so much.

I was unclear. I meant the rear when looking at the pic. On the car, it would be the single front attachment.

See what you mean.

As others have said it must, I think, clamp around the X member - can't realistically go anywhere else.

Looking at the picture in PET at the bit that would meet the Xmember there are two flanges the lower one would sit at the forward bottom edge of the Xmember accepting a horizontal bolt pointing fore and aft. The upper flange sits at the top rear edge of the Xmember accepting a vertical bolt. What I think we are not seeing is the missing piece of the clamp which I guess is a flat plate bent 90degrees to go over the top and down the front of the X member.

What I don't get is the quadrant shaped vertical piece of plate located forward of the hitch. Looks like it could have a bolt hole through the plate to take a horizontal bolt orientated side to side but what would it bolt to?

SharkTuner test mule S4 has factory hitch installed. There are two holes in rear bumber cover like PorKen says. Sadly towball itself has disapeared over the years. I can take a look how its mounted to Xmember over the weekend. Few pics should clear it up.

Erkka

Any chance you could post some photos of how the towbar is fitted to the X member and the rear of the car?

TIA

If camera decides to co-operate, no problem. Should be able to get good pictures at least once car is up on jack stands later this winter. Will try get some next weekend already but they might not be from best possible angle as suspension is pretty low even in stock seting.

This is the instructions for the Watling towbar for the 16V models I mentioned earlier - not only does it bolt to the bumper shock mounts but also to the rear of the boot. Also Different I think from the factory bar in that it bolts to the floor of the rhs seat.

Instructions courtesy of Smiffy in NZ who has one on one of his 928s.

Watling also do a 32V towbar.

We just got in a Euro car with the factory hitch installed on it but it is missing the ball.

AFAIK, the factory bar requires you to cut two holes in the bumper cover, one large one for the bar, and one for the connector. (S4 bumper covers have patterns on the back side to show where to cut).

The side plates fit over (under?) the bumper shocks/impact tubes. What I can't figure out is how the rear part attaches. The thin part fits between the battery box and the gas tank, and I think the bar clamps around the crossmember, but I'm not sure.

There's also a wire harness/connector. In the pod, there's a [<= =>] trailer signal light.

Default I like this one.

I like this one. Anybody have dimensions, suggested parts list and instructions. Can't be that tough to reproduce. I know a couple of draftmen that can make the drawings for a 12-pack.

If the rear bumper was firmly attached to the car that MIGHT be an option but it is bolted to SHOCKS designed to collapse and absorb IMPACT.

Did anything ever become of this? I'm needing one for the DD and my deflatable dinghy.
