John,
Try shorting together Pins Z4 & Z6. These are the switched pins from the alarm unit - and should be bridged if there is no alarm. Does you car have an alarm? is it functional? is it possibly in alarm (imobilizer) mode.

Alan,
I have a long key but I have not seen any clue besides that of the presence of an alarm. I checked the Z plug and have a red, a blue, a brown, a black/white, a blue and another brown. None appear to be jumpered together up into the sub-harness.

John - so sounds like you do have an alarm, based both on the long key and lack of jumper on the Z plug (alarm only) - link pins Z4 & Z6 and see it will start - you can pull plug Z and make up a jumper with a 2 female quick disconnect connectors crimped to a wire If it starts this way then the alarm has either failed, is disconnected or is in active 'alert' mode (in which case you will probably also have a current drain you may want to debug this - or pull the whole alarm module).

Alan, I tried jumpering Z4 & Z6- no start no fuel pump. I should leave the Z plug plugged in to jumper them, right?
I have no current drain besides the obligatory door safety lights and I have pulled those bulbs

Humm - check fuse 11 and try the jumper again if that was fried...

I don't thinks its the ignition swicth - since these circuits run off the 15 bus (not the X-Bus) and if the 15 bus is inactive - the LH won't work either... At least that's what seems most likely. Try wiggling the switch for good measure - does the dash light up in bulb check mode as normal with the ignition on?

I was going down the ignition switch route, however Alans suggestion of the alarm could be the culprit. Where is the alarm module on an 84?

Alan et al,
I pulled the 11 fuse and rejumpered Z4 and Z6. Still a no go.

I also locked and unlocked both doors just for giggles but there was no change.

I have no idea where the alarm module is ,Roger

Roger,
We will discuss an ignition switch on Saturday. I want to drive it to Einstein's Saturday morning and then take it home and pull the pod again at which time I can replace ignition switch.
Can't wait to see your newest one!
