Default Door trim piece - removal and reuse

In a previous post, I had mentioned that I've decided on the white 1987 928 S4. Based on the Andrew Olson's on-site inspection and a follow-on PPI, I have negotiated with the seller to have the newly replaced (used door) passenger side door re-sprayed due to excessive overspray around the door trim piece (black anodized trim piece on the top leading edge of the door from A-pillar to B-pillar).

Is there a way this trim piece can be removed without sustaining damage to its alignment and reattached after the painting is done?

I would order a replacement trim piece but am trying to get the deal closed so I can take my Shark back to ATL.

Thanks,
Larry

What's the answer?

That piece on my driver's door doesn't have the two ends aligned perfectly - where they meet at the rear window edge - and I'd like to correct it.

I was wondering about this trim. The piece on my passenger door along the bottom window edge has a little of the black paint/ coating flaked off. Can this be repainted, recoated, or repaired in another way?

Randy V,

I spoke to Dave this morning and told me the basics of what needed to be done. Since I haven't taken delivery of my 928 yet, I can only visualize the protocol. I provided Dave's contact information to the paint/body shop supervisor that was doing the work. Later this afternoon I spoke to the car dealer I've bought the 928 from and I was assured that the work went well, my Shark's passenger door has been repainted to quality standards and the trim removal and re-installation went as planned.

In a nutshell, as I understand it to be. The inner trim must be removed to expose a set of rivets holding the anodized aluminum trim. The rivets are grinded off and the aluminum trim carefully pried off the door. Re-installation would include using rivets to hold the aluminum trim back into place.

bobbigham,

My experience with anodized aluminum trim pieces is that you'll need to have them coated (anodized) since paint will not keep. I'm not sure the cost of anodizing and even if the finish will match close enough. This is especially true when working with weathered trim pieces. I don't believe you can really match all the trim pieces (new against OE).

The Porsche anodized aluminum trim pieces will show wear and actually give off almost a purple-satin finish. This holds true with my 930's black anodized trim pieces.

Aluminum trim pieces on my 930 are a combination black anodized while other pieces are flat black powder coated.

Hope I was able to answer both your questions.

Thanks,
Larry
