Default Little surprise (engine still runs when key switched off - RV)

Arrived back at home after a 20 mile trip ( 84' 928S 5 speed) and turned off the engine - or tried to - and she kept right on runnin'. The key turned to the normal engine off point but just kept on runnin'. Didn't want to disconnect battery so put it in gear, brake down & stall it. Don't know what you'd do in an auto but it could happen.
I suspect the key/lock interface - check it out tomorrow.

Scary!

Definitely disconnect the battery, I know it's a PIA what with the spare tire and all but brake-stalling cannot be good for the poor shark.

Default Disconnect the Battery

This was a consideration at the time of the incident but not sure it is the "approved method"- be interested in hearing from the electrical gurus.

Disconnecting the battery with the engine running (regardless of what position the key is in) is not a good idea. Stalling it with the brake while maybe not good for it, probably isn't bad either. It's still a better option then disconnecting the battery.

After you get the car shut down by stalling it, then disconnect the battery.

I was in too much of a panic, so I disconnected the battery while she was running in the garage. I guest I'm lucky that nothing happen to the brain.

For an automatic car, I guess you'd pull the fuel pump fuse.......

What about pulling the coil wire to the distributor?

Sounds like a bad ignition switch. That's what mine turned out to be. If I did it just right, I was able to take the key out of the ignition with the car running. Not good.

Bad idea...
a. there are two of them (except some early 16valvers)
b. can give you some serious shock when the volts from the coil flow into you instead of the car.

The quick and easy way is to pull the fuel pump fuse as mentioned. This is best regardless of manual or auto. The car will stop running within 3 sec and there is not chance of damaging anything (or yourself).
