I see your point maybe the guide will be more representative of a person who has no prior knowledge of 928's. I just don't think we should give someone a hard time for trying to make an informed decision on a vehicle purchase. responses are a matter of choice so if the discussion seems pointless you can move on apparently people have been reading this so is it a waste it's a matter of opinion I am interested in what his data collection reveals.

Nothing too fancy, a list and description of all the years, a spec chart to see what changed, collection of links, and from this thread some idea of what common repairs cost and/or require in time and tools. Regional and shop to shop variation in cost might be very helpful as well.

Top of my curiosity list are; PPI, TB, WP, and AC. A common format would also be real helpful, like

2006, Los Angeles, dealer, tuneup, $35, 1 hour, tools required Visa card and newspaper coupon, 1988 S4, needed to pass smog test, worked fine. Book time and shop rate would also be great to compare.

Thanks, anything that results from this will have all personal info removed, be available to anybody here that wants it free, but might get stuck on ebay for some cost of doing it amount like $1 or so.
Rent a "Bill Ball" and buy him a new set of TIRES, too!

You will not get a better deal or pool of knowledge.

Cheers,

and the cost of Rennlist membership..PRICELESS!

Found the guide, Walmart.com has it ready to ship for about $16 total, thanks for the tip Ryan.

Also noticed this, kind of a short form of what I have in mind, and you all may talk me out of if I find enough is already done.

Magazine I had to order from the UK, but its on the way.

ok good, work with those.

Also, someone has made a PPI checklist, so you can save the time reproducing us another one after months of research, i think its on the 928oc website but i maybe mistaken.

So i think we are covered, no need to plot data points and come up with equations on the "best value for money 928 available"

pick out a car you like, have it checked out and if its good buy it or look for another one, no need to x ray cars (although some here have for ****s and giggles) and no need to plug in vaviables into equations.

Good luck, i hope after all this you get an exceptional car, not one of those deals where you drive 1000 miles then the thrust bearing rears its ugly head! At this point i expect the car you finally commit to go a further 50,000 miles with 0 maintanence.

I like that you can take this in stride, i have been a bit hard on you, but you roll with the punches. so "good on you"

oh and "OB" i think is OLD BASTARD or non rear spoiler pre S cars

Smartest person I know once told me the best way to proceed in most larger projects is to spend half your budget up front figuring out the best way to do it.

OTOH he worked for NASA.

I think OB is just a misprint of OBO or best offer.

no OB is an affectionate term for the older cars

ala Jim B's "very brown car"

A wise man once told me: It is better to ask a question and look stuptd, than not ask one and be stupid. When you know what someone is seeking it is easier to guide. This way you always stay within budget.

Thank You. You can put stripes on anything, it's what is underneath that makes the difference.

Here's my contribution to the non DIY cost analysis. Here is an Excel spreadsheet which lists everything that was done to my GT between 1990 and May of this year by the first three owners here in OC/LA, none of whom were DIYers, mostly at Newport Autosport and another place called Westwerke.

Caveats:

1. The pricing is up to 15 years old, so it may not be applicable today, and some of it was warranty work.

2. I included all the details I could glean from the receipts that I have

3. The car was neglected between 2001 and 2006. I have purchased nearly $7000 in parts alone since May, in order to bring the car back up to snuff and make it as mechanically 'right' as possible.

Hope this is vaguely useful, if not amusing/horrifying/take your pick.....
