Default Fuel leak found under the Fuel tank -Chamilka from Fairfax VA

Hi all this is my first post in the Rennlist. First of all it was so nice meeting some of you all in the Buffalo wings factory happy hour for the 928 event in Virginia.

I took my 89 Porsche S4 for oil change; the technician showed me some fuel leak under the gas tank, small drips right from the middle. It looks as if it is coming from the tank but there is no hole or anything on the outer surface of the tank. We also noted the fuel tend to leak more when the engine is running.
So what are the possible problems? Where should I start? I am going to take it to a Porsche shop but I would like to know the sequence of thing I should check for.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Remove the cover under the tank that conceals the fuel pump and check the hoses and clamps. Easy to do and almost certainly the source of the leak.

This may well be what you find

The fact it happens when the engine is running means that it is not the tank that it leaking, but one of the fuel lines after the fuel pump.

Ok I have and update. I am also seeking advice.
So you all were right on the money, the tech just called me and said the fuel is leaking from the middle of the fuel pump. He cannot see any loose hoses and clamps.
At this point the garage (curry’s auto) is checking prices for Fuel pump etc.
Do u think I should replace the fuel pump, if I do are there are thing I should replace along with it.

I'm curious what Curry's would charge. But...

if you can wait, maybe we can take care of it during our monthly GTG (next week). Get acquainted with the 928-specific vendors we use (e.g., 928 Intl, 928 Specialists, etc) to source your parts. I'll "go out on a limb," and say us local guys will work for food.

My leak was just the crush rings on the high pressure side of the fuel pump. I am waiting on a fuel filter to call the job - done.

The pump for an 88 is about 200 bucks from a couple of the vendors.

Crush rings are a pain to find but they are about a buck and I needed 3. If I got ripped-off at 3 buck so be it.

You should be able to find crush rings at your local Porsche dealer.

Right after I bought my '85 I was having trouble with my fuel pump (bad wiring.) Once I got it rewired I noticed it was also leaking fuel. My pump was also leaking, and it wasn't the crush washers. It was leaking where the outer case was crimped on so it is possible yours is leaking there as well. I bought a new fuel pump and just threw away the old one. No more leaks.

hey John
Thank you kindly for your offer may be I should do it, I am thinking at least to get the parts. I talked to the nice lady from 928 Specialists; she says she has all the parts. But the parts numbers the Curry’s auto gave me is very different and not available anywhere.

The Curri’s auto told me I need the followings:
1) Banjo bolt : 893.906.093: in the 928 Specialists this item is listed as: Fuel Pump Check Valve 77-95.
2)Washer : 900.123.00520 : this items is not to be found anywhere?
3) pump: 928.601.0403 : this is also not to be found

so can you kindly send me the next monthly GTG (next week) meting infor.
chamilkap@hotmail.com or call me at 202 441 6444. I couldn’t find your business card so I don’t have your phone numbers etc.
thanks a bunch
Chamilka

Hey Chamilka,

Don't know what you schedule is but let's look at your fuel pump this weekend regardless of when/where the GTG is. We need to take the cover off and see where the leak is - easy part. Maybe go to the dealer and order the washers (crush rings) - might have to wait a week for delivery.

Pump is part #928 608 04 03

Let me know what your schedule is this weekend (i.e., Fri, Sat, Sun).

Sent you a PM.

around here there is no such thing as "local Porsche dealer"

I went to my local " hose and fittings solution " store.

Find one near you...
