Default early 32v weights myth? Fact or fiction?

I took my 86.5 with all the traveling goodies, ie: Spare, tools, air comp., extra water, oil, etc and weighed in at a transfer station.

3600lbs with me in the car.

My car has, no cats, no smog pump or related equipment, viscous fan delete, x-pipe, rmb, spal electric fans, heavy MM 17" turbo twist wheels, external crank case breather, H4 headlights, is missing upper half of rear seats, does have rear a/c. Oh and I weigh in at 200lbs.

Net car weight in traveling trim = 3400lbs.

Be interested in what a stock '86.5 weighs in at...

thanks for that data point shane...I have alway thought the 85/86 cars weighed the same as the S4..Adams came in around the same as yours a while back (88 S4 AT)...so this rumor that the old style (85/86) cars weigh 3300 or less is busted haha..

Later,
Tom

Shane
I weighed my stock S4 auto with about 1/3 of a tank of gas (I wasn't in the car) & it came back at 3460? So I figure it to be about 3520 with a full tank? The owners manual lists S4 autos at 3550lbs...I have an RMB so its slightly lighter...I guess that accounts for some weight loss?

Tim Murphy and I took three 928's to the scale today:

All have a stage 3 supercharger kit

1981 5-speed - full tank - no spare or tool kit - rest of the interior is stock
3,300lbs

1987 auto - 2/3 tank - full tool kit / spare / interior
3,560lbs

1988 5-speed - 2/3 tank - full tool kit / spare / interior
3,580lbs

Interesting that the auto was lighter than the 5 speed?

Manual gearbox itself is some 30 kg lighter than automatic but clutch and little longer torque tube add weight. Factory says manual should be 20 kg lighter. Maybe difference in this case is sunroof body and/or more equipment. What kind of seats they have for example?

Well I do have a stock 86.5 5 speed that I can weigh next time I'm on vacation. I'll let you guys no how it turns out.

Plus I need to get all the travel goodies out of Helmut and reweigh him before I break out the G-tech and do some runs.

The 20 pound difference is only 0.5% of the weight. Most truck scales have an accuracy of 1 or 2% (so plus/minus 35-70 lbs).

Also, 20 pounds is 3 gallons of gas. What's the accuracy of the gas gauge?

HTML Code:
1981 5-speed - full tank - no spare or tool kit -
rest of the interior is stock 3,300lbs
The weight advantage of an 81 euro like mine makes up for a lot of the power & torque advantage of the later models

OK

Weight to power ratio

3400/281=12.09:1 lbs/rwhp

Now Louies' S4 put down what 299rwhp?

3550/299=11.87:1 lbs/rwhp.

Not bad... my 86.5 comes in close to what a healthy S4 gets...

Now if I could lose some weight and if Chris would throw some extra grub on Louies' plate I might be able to keep up with him on some of those PacNW fun drives...

Keep the data coming in guys!!

The '85/'86 always perform better than most think they should. Probably some is that they are a little lighter, but the '85/'86 engines also seem to make more power than the rated value. I think there is actually less difference in power than the 28 advertised difference (316 - 288).

If I stay busy this winter, I'll have my GT at about 6.3 lbs/hp.

Louie,

One of my goals is to one day see (and listen to) your emerging GT. Would be worth a trip to the gorge. Keep on keepin' on.

Harvey
