I don't think that will work too well, unless the posters edit/delete their info as they go. In a year's time, will my HAVE/NEED still be listed even though I don't have it anymore? How many old posts will people have to wade through, finding that the things listed are no longer available?

Bronto,

Good point. There's got to be some way to do this that isn't too complicated. Is there a way we can break it up into parts groups or maybe have a section that's just for stuff like this. You can see that in just this thread alone there are half a dozen people with different listings. Are there any web designers out there that can come up with anything?

Maybe a dedicated website that has one screen for what's available and one for what's needed, and then people can just scroll through a list rather than pages and pages of threads that deal with all different items and topics.

That would be a fun project, and I am a web/database designer, but I won't have any time to do such a thing until next month at the earliest. In the meantime, I think the key problem is stale data. Maybe a new sticky topic every month (unsticking the old ones) is the most practical solution.

This is sounding more like a Parts Swap or Parts Depot... would work well if people will keep up with what is in "inventory" and what has been used or sent out... I know I have spares of a few things I'd be willing to part with now if I thought in the future I could recoup or call-in a favor for a part elsewhere. The older these cars get the harder it seems to be in finding the simplest parts. I mean, look at the NLA list...

Bronto,

I don't know what you mean by 'sticky topic' is that a web guy thing?

I'm a db programmer with no web experience except the old: 'Here's my dog, here's my car> kind of thing.'

It seems like if we could have people post things they could renew the post or just let them expire. If that's what you meant, then cool. If it requires a webmaster/mistress to maintain the status I think it wouldn't be worth it (to them) and it would be a hassle. If it could pretty much run itself though, I think it would fill the bill nicely. Is there a way to verify membership here so we don't have people just logging on to get free parts that will later turn up on eBay?
Just a few thoughts, maybe too many.

GeaBaldy,

There's the rub. I've got one car and very few spare parts right now. I could list a few things, but I would definitely be on the 'need' heavy side. I don't mind paying for what I need, but as far as calling in favors, I don't know how it would equal out, you know? Some of us barely have enough room in our garages for our tools and the wife's car (mine sleeps under cover in the driveway. The car not the wife).

Your not the only one heavy on the need... I could use a good number of items as well, and also don't mind paying for them, but I also see the joy in being able to simply give a part that will either be shelved indefinately or thrown out. For example, when I bought my car I got a box full of stuff, most of which I have gone through and figured out what some of the items are.. others I am still trying to figure out.. I am need of an Oil Pressure sending unit.. mine is all hinkey and the bobbling needle is more of a bother than anything right now. Would be happy to swap something from ye ole parts box for one if someone had one to exchange or just to give...

What I was trying to get at was a collective effort which this thread appears to be doing.. This is the sort of stuff that makes me happy I bought this car.. and the fact there is a big enough "fan base" that is willing to offer a hand when needed.. I never found one for the Vette, and the one for my Scout was good but we were spread to the 7 ends of the earth...

Well, I have a complete A/C system (most removed from car already) - I live in the far North and A/C is a waste. It worked when I bought the car but never used so no guarantees. I need one wheel for my car. It is as shown in the avatar. I put a ding in it a couple years back and it continues to be annoying - factory 16" wheel.

Warren,

You need the stock wheel for the '85? Maybe we can make a deal. My A/C is most likely toast (hasn't risen to the top of the list yet) and I'm thinking of moving away from the stocks. I'm not in a position to part with the wheels yet but maybe if Bronto or someone sets up the Swap Shop or whatever it's going to be called, I'll post them or get in touch with you.

My wheels are in my avatar as well.

"Sticky topic" is web forum lingo for what was suggested; making the topic stick at the top of the message list.

Since I have about a month of no time to do, but time to think, I'll consider how to do this. Maybe accumulate points for parts made available? You could then say you have a part that you'd sell for $100, or free for someone with (say) 5 points? This would encourage others to put their own hoard of parts up, and prevent the site from degenerating into just a classified ad space. Yes, listings could expire automatically, and you'd be able to add/edit your own listings. This could be fun.

I'd probably have to take donations though. I don't mind working for free on stuff like this, but the bandwidth taken for the web server might be substantial. Donations might work, especially if people are getting their parts for "free".

well what i have is a pair of taillights for my 83 928s i want to throw in the parts pool. they have little hairline cracks . but are otherwise ok

now, my car is sort of not too bad.
as you can see in the inside pic.
doesnt have carpet i want to get some black carpet one day , no insulation , the top dash is cracked , the pod,too ( i bondod it to get it ready for pauls famous leather cover, one day) the shifter boot is an easy fix (maybe nicole would give me a little discount for it?). i am thinking of dying the whole useable leather parts in black, i hope that way i can cover up the sopts in the leather.
the right windows switch is missing one of the brass (?) lever contacts.
and the front seats are really bad.

i am looking for a descent priced wooden momo wheel, so i promised paul my other brown steering wheel and this one.

i don't want free things but what would be awesome is if when you have something and you think of throwing it out. maybe when you turn your shark into a mean track machine, you thing about me.
this car is supposed to be in family for another 20 years. and i try to do anything to turn her around and get into a more adequate state.
btw way i even tried to get my car into overhauling with chip foose.
i know that is sort of retarded. but it was a try to get her into shape

I wish I had some parts to give out, I'm just in the process of gathering spare parts and needed stuff.

If I ever come across stuff I don't need, i'll gladly post them up.

I have a pair of the 21 mm wheel spacers that are taking up too much space in my parts bin.

N!
