low voltage - solved
One thing I'm still not sure about... did my '82 leave the factory with a generator or an alternator?
It had an alternator when I bought it, but there were only two electrical connections between the car and the alternator. The alternator had a 3rd connector, a spade terminal on the regulator, which from drawings looks like it should connect directly to the battery positive post. I added a wire from that spade connector to the battery and it appears to have fixed by battery charging issues and helped boost the voltage at idle. Is there a reason the car didn't already have such a connection?

If that is the exciter wire it should be switched power from the battery (15 circuit). This circuit normally runs through the switch, to the instrument panel (light and resistor) then on to the alternator. Continous battery voltage may harm the alternator.
