If there is someone as qualified and reputable in your area then it would make sense to stay local.

A lot of the old trans we try to rebuild are too far gone to rebuild so we salvage the few good parts and junk the rest. When you have a local guy open up your gear box odds are he is far less experienced with Porsche /928 boxes and may either not replace all the parts that need replacing or want to replace MORE than is needed just to be "safe" . And $2,500 may seem like a lot of money but not when a 1-2 gear cluster is $3,077 for the early car new from Porsche. We had a NEW GTS 5 speed box several years ago I sold it for $7,500 Porsche list was closer to $15,000 for that transmission as I recall. But then a GTS complete engine was over $30,000 !! About the ONLY inexpensive part about an old 928 is that you can BUY one for very little ... the care and feeding is about the same if you have a $25,000 GT or a $2,500 1978.

$2,500 for a rebuilt tranny from a reputable source, is a bargin. Anything less is a get-what-you-pay-for experiment..........

I just put $12k into a warrantied rebuilt hydro-pump from ZF for my C4.......and that car has 92,000 miles on it. R&R a Porsche tranny is not something you want to do any more often than necessary........sometimes you just hafta step up.
