I didn't say they were cheap. i said they seem to be made of cheap materials, however as someone pointed out that they shouldn't feel so flimsy so I am attributing my "feel" of them to being 23yrs old beside an oven set to roast.

I fully understand there is a reason for everything the way it is on the car... even if it is something as dumb as the headlight washers.. I don't understand them and they seem useless to me.. BUT... someone must use them or asked for them otherwise they wouldn't be there...

I'm in no way an expert of these cars.. I have only owned mine for a month and reading through the service manuals makes my head spin at some of the things they have done. Being the first water-cooled motor porsche made there are def. signs of over engineering. To me it shows that they were striving to make the ultimate driving and touring motor without making any compromise to quality, longevity, performance, weight, and over all cost. I've owned penty of japanese, american and british autos of varying years makes and models and to date the only other car that makes me smile as much as I have when I crawl into was my Corvette... even on that car Chevy had years of experience making water-cooled performance motors and they still managed to over-design parts of it.. but when it comes to those intakes... it appears as though they were an after-thought... at least in the stock configuration, but I am sure someone spent time making that design to maximize cool airflow from the front back into the air-box while trying to keep a good amount of noise down and not cause massive power loss in the processes.. at least, thats what I hope...

I've wanted to get to a dyno for some time now just to see what would happen to the numbers. There is alot of heat under the hood. But I figured that the air wasn't in the tubes long enough to make a real difference, but I may be completely wrong. Honestly If I did find out that I did lose 5hp, I would still keep them on. If I was doing any kind of racing, then obviously I wouldn't bother with them. But I hardly ever take the revs up and would never contiplate street racing, so I won't be missing the power that much. But thats just me. I know most would never put anything on there car that makes it lose power. I've got 2 sets in my garage that will be going on ebay soon, but I've held off wondering about this very issue. I've just been sooo busy lately and haven't had time to play with the shark, and the nearest dyno is over an hour away. But I would like to have some data before I ever try to sell these. The time will come eventually. Here is a pic for anyone that hasn't seen them yet. I need to take one outside in some good light.

LOL, now you see why I don't care about loosing a little power. Who knows, it may be alot. I had a shop make the mandrel bend for me, then I do the rest. I went through a decent amount of tubing trying to get everything right. They are aluminum, but not sure on the exact gauge. There is a grommet on the bottom for the breathing holes on the timing belt covers. If your motor mounts are shot, then the engine will sit too low for the tubes to sit on the timing covers, but if you mounts are good, the fit is perfect. I've had them on for several thousand miles and haven't had any issues so far.
Thanks for the comments!

to get an idea of what my engine bay looks like.. take yours.. and can of high heat paint... don't aim it directly at the engine but just spray it above and let it all rest on the engine... there ya go.. mine looks similar to what that would be like... along with some bad cases of dry-rotted vac. hoses... been replacing those as I find them... but the air-intakes keep me guessing

Nicole,

Good point about the timing cover holes. I saw that they were supposed to fit on there, but mine have warped so much they don't fit on one side anymore (mental note to replace ASAP). And to your earlier point, it's all about making it work like it was designed to work with these cars. The shape, material, weight are all by design.

Another thread pointed out that the shape of the inside of the tube can affect your airflow as well and changing that will possibly require retuning your system in order to accommodate a different 'laminar flow' as they put it.

Chris,

That's a beauty. I didn't know that about the motor mounts, I guess I'll have to check them too.

GeaBaldyVx, I think anyone that buys an OB shark with a decent engine bay is pretty lucky. I've spent many many hours on mine, and it's still not like I want it. If you ever decide to remove the manifolds, the paint shouldn't be too bad getting off. Then just have them powdercoated, it makes a world of difference.
This is what mine looked like not long after I got it.

Mike, because the plastic tubes are flexible, they don't seem to have a problem staying on the covers, but with the aluminum tubes, they won't move even though the engine sits lower with bad mounts. When I first started the intake, my mounts were really bad, and there was alot of room. I was afraid once I replaced the mounts, it might shove the tubes into the strut bar. I did replace my mounts just before SITM, and the fit is perfect, I guess I got lucky.
