Default difference between FAST kit and Murph's

I'm in the process of buying a 1988 supercharged 928 and according to the documents provided by the owner it looks like the supercharger is a FAST kit - (some specifics from the owners april 2004 Vortech Engineering reciept)
Description: S/C, V-2,S-TRIM,CCW POLISHED
S/C PULLEY 3.125" 6 GROOVE

I'm totally new to the 928 and superchargers. I have read numerous threads here on the subject and realize some of the debates rising from them rival the Palestinian Israeli conflict and I'm not trying to resurect those moments
But I am pretty sure I'm going to buy this car and being supercharged is one of the reasons I picked it.
So, can you tell me if there would be major improvements to either power or reliability or durability by switching this system to Murph's kit? How much of the kit would have to be changed and approximately how much would it cost?

Here's a picture and thanks for any insight into my future purchase!

No offence to Mark R. but Tim's kit is considerably better engineered. Tim's bracket/tensioner and pulley system is second to none. The whole idea of using the power steering pump to tension the supercharger belt kinda' scares me. I installed a F.A.S.T. kit on a local 89' and it took a considerable amount of re-engineering to make it reliable. That car has since been upgraded a few times and is currently using Tim's bracket/pulley system. You will also be very limited on the amount of boost you can run with a long 6 rib belt. Tim's uses a much shorter and better controlled 8 rib that can handle much more boost without destroying the power steering pump.

Hopefully Tim will chime in with a parts list and price for you.

Not to hijack this thread, Dave, but now that I have some space on the lower pulley, is there some source for 8 or even 10 rib pulleys for the Autorotor?

Default FAST kits

I am no longer associated with FAST.

No offense taken Dave, though I think you should know what I do take offense to: someone acquiring your intial prototype FAST w/o signing the non-compete form, working with me to perfect it on his S4 over the course of a year: fueling, breathers, etc), sharing the joy of some great intial dynos, then vanishing for a year while the individual decides to copy the FAST kit & market it by bashing the nuances assoc. with prototype components.

Yeah, that burns me up.

Kevin,

This sounds way to hot a personal topic to go into public forum It is best to be a JAFO (just another freaking observer), imho.

Mark, considering the kit I'll be getting in that 928 up above, would you recomend upgrading it or removing it for a turbo system? I'm looking for some serious roll on power starting anywhere between 30mph and 60mph on up to top end....

Um, lets see?

Different bracket, pulleys, tensioner, belt routing, intake, breather, fueling, piping, all hardware/brackets, full manual, weekend install plug and play system. So far so good on mine over the last year and a half.

About the only thing that is the same as a FAST kit is the concept of hanging a compressor off the front of the engine. Sounds like someone is a little uptight about that, and gee, that someone is marketing a turbo system now. I have a feeling this could get ugly.

I wonder what his answer to that would be.

The FAST kit was not the first setup to hang a blower from the water pump bracket either.

Well you have to understand I didn't create this thread to pick a fight and basically I'm glad Mark is posting in it because he designed the SC that's in the car I'm buying and he also sells a turbo charger of his design...so for my interest he's amply qualified to answer. Will he have a biased view? Sure! But he's the father of two of the pieces I'm asking him to comapare so I'm interested in his opinion.

Another thing, I don't have any history with Murph or Mark or any of the other members who might have taken a side in the fueds that pop up around this topic, yes I've read most of the threads, so I'd love to hear from Murph as well and will take his input at face value with no prejudgement just like I'll take Marks.

I'm coming from a different perspective since I'm giving up my old sport tourer to buy the 928 and my old ride does the quarter in the low 10's and cruises at a top speed of 170mph so even though the 5psi boost of the FAST kit will be impressive in a 1988 S4 I know I'll be wanting more I just need to know how much more is there and at what cost.....

You guys are welcome to keep fighting though because you tend to spout off a lot of good information as you try to win the debate. The bystanders like me end up learning a lot
