Default New motor mounts (done!) vs. Jager Speedmount II

Well, after many hours under the car, I completed the motor mount install I've been putting off for a year. I used the Anchor mounts, which I received *gratis* from John S. (deleriousga) at this year's SITM. Thanks again, John!

I followed Pirtle's writeup for the job, and found it to be pretty clear and straightforward. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to drop the crossmember entirely, but I managed to get the job done without doing so, and I think it might have saved me a bit of aggravation not having to raise and reposition it.

Another question I have is whether there is a particular torque spec for the sway bar bolt at the droplink...anyone?

So the reason for the post.... I have, of course, read all of the glowing praise for the dramatic improvement in ride quality this job provides, and I could see that my motor was not rocking when the throttle was blipped, so I figured I needed it.

My first decision was to get the Jager Speedmount, which wedges inbetween the rear of the oil pan and the crossmember. It worked very well to smooth things out. That was over a year ago (maybe two).

Firing the car up and going out for the first post motor mount install was less than overwhelming. It certainly smoothed out the vibrations on cold start (the Speedmount works best when warm) and idle, but was otherwise not so different from the Speedmount performance.

If anyone is out there riding around rough, dreading the mount replacement, I recommend the Speedmount as a very good alternative. It's easy to install, and has no downside that I experienced.

Just my .928¢

Chaad....

BTDT - but consider the speedmount as a TEMP fix...The long-term stress on the oil pan can't be a good thing....

Good job my friend. We should have done your oil pan gasket too. I even have one sitting in my garage. But that's okay, I didn't mine when I did my MM, so it looks like I get to do it again this winter! Yippeee!!

Here's your torque specs.

Drop link to Knuckle - 46Nm (34ftlb)

Drop link to Sway bar - 85Nm (63ftlb)

Anyone else find it interesting that most Porsche owners take great pride in the engineering, advanced design ,superior quality, history of performance everything which fullfills the "Excellence is Expected" ,design and build the very best sports car that they know how.... Then to save $600 or so ...bolt in parts for a Ford or shove a door mat under the oil pan ...

Yeah Jim, it's called human nature and it's the same on every automotive board I visit. The Ferrari 456 guys are now concerning themselves with whether they can fit a GM transmission in if and when the original one fails. Apparently the two trannies share parts.

Lamborghini Gallardo guys will go on at length at the superiority of the car and lament that it shares anything at all with an Audi....until something breaks and then it's, "I wonder if this Audi part number will work."

Jim, it's simply a matter economy. I don't prefer Ford parts and door mats on principle, but money is an object of consideration. Sometimes, I even have to buy *used* parts from 928 Int'l! If I could afford it, I'd pay to have everything done at the dealer, I reckon.

Anyway, if using free motor mounts (which, apparently, work just fine) means I get to continue driving the dream, that's the route I'm gonna take. I love having the car and being part of the 928 community.

You don't sound too traumatised by the job, perhaps I will tackle it after all (I've had the Anchor mounts on my shelf for 18 months now).

Can you describe your situation regarding space, lifts or jacks, extra pairs of hands etc?

There's only so much of the fun budget allocated to the 928 and if you can save some $$$ that means you can buy something else like............turbo twist wheels on sale at 928 INT.

Jim, Jim , Jim...
I am very surprised to hear this come from you. You, of all people, I would have thought accepted the school of thought about value! And in that school of thought Pareto is the Head Master. God love the father of the 80/20 rule. The Pareto priciple in the context of car parts says that if I can get 80% of the functionality for 20% of the price over the genuine part, then that is a greater value for my money (which by deffinition is a scarce resource) and should be seriously considered.

In my experience with the Ford MMs, they are far superior to failed mounts. . I would not consider the speed mounts, becasue I believe this a temporary fix at best. But the Ford MM's not only provied at least 80% of the NVH damping I am looking for, but are also roughly 20% of the price of Genuine Porsche parts.

Sure they cut into your company's sales and perhaps your commission (not sure if you work on commission or not), but you've got to admit for a car that will give you more than 80% of the performance of the new crop of super cars for significantly less than 20% of the cost, the Ford MM's should feel right at home!

I guess you would have to ask yourself how much” engineering, advanced design ,superior quality, history of performance everything which fullfills the "Excellence is Expected" ,design and build the very best” goes into the design and build of a rubber motor mount.

If I lost my gas cap and one from a Ford Pinto would work at one tenth the cost, I’d do it… not sure about the gas tank though.

Next thing you know, you guys are going to say that you aren't using the genuine Porsche windshield washer fluid in these 10-28 year old cars either.

I guess following Jim's train of thought, all 928's should be taken to Porsche dealers for all repairs. This might be a little tough (out of business) on the big three or four but after all we must maintain the "Excellence is Expected" attitude. I certainly wouldn't want to put some dirty old used part on my 18 year old driver.
I'm just busting your chops Jim. I think someone must have **** in your oatmeal this morning. I for one am glad your there when I need to save big bucks over a German order. Cause I'm as cheap as the next guy. :>)

Where is a good place to get motor mounts these days. I am seeing them from 68.00 each and up, is that about right.
