Default 928 CS

Can someone inform me about the production and distribution of the Club Sport version of the 928? What year(s) was it produced? Where was it distributed, in what kind of numbers? What are the significant differences from the standard autobox version and from the available 5-spd version of the day?

Default CS Production

10 1988 cars and 7 1989 cars - I'm not sure where the 2 US ones come from, as Porsche AG have confirmed in writing only 10 88 cars - I would guess the 2 to the US are either from the 10 and were imported ones (for demonstration cars) after being made to US spec or maybe some of the 1987 prototypes.

I also remember there is a guy in the US with an 88 manual, that in 1989, he converted to CS spec, by buying the CS cams, ECU's etc direct from the factory.

2 US '88 comes from Jörg Austen's book and I think Samuel has also said he has some info of them.

Are there any CS parts available now? What about the AC compressor, the idea of a lighter one sounds good, was it a commonly available unit or modified just for the CS?

I have had the VIN given by Jorg Austen checked by Porsche France and I have been in touch with someone who has owned a white one in the USA. As I don't know the VIN of the car, I can't confirm this one as a real one. This is maybe a Euro '89 that was imported later.

I will certainly have informations aobut the black '88 in Autria soon.
I will also have pictures and informations about a green '89 in Germany soon.
By the way Adrian, I would still like to have the list of VIN of the 89 MY.
I will update my website as soon as I have checked informations.

No 928 CS is for sale at the moment to my knowledge. There's one that was for sale in Stuttgart around a year ago but I don't advice to buy it...

The CS was kind of the forerunner to the GT. The GT didn't get the 201 lb diet that the CS got, but does have the hotter cams, more free flowing exhaust, engine management system changes to go with the cams. You can still buy the CS front springs, about 10% stiffer than S4/GT springs. There is a thread here on weight savings if you want to slim down.

I saw a yellow CS parked next to another 928S4 at the Generac 500 (Road America ALMS 500) back in late August. Sweet ride. Obviously race prepped, with the lights removed, fogs replaced with brake ducts, and club sport markings, as well as, I think, some sponsorship.

Had no idea they were so rare.

Don't trust a sticker to identify a real CS. Only the VIN can be a proof.

I saw a widebody S4 with a CS sticker this week-end

Hi David,

I'm glad you liked my car.

I bought the car fully prepped from Ronn Gottschalk at 928 International; it is a really sweet car, and Ronn gets all the credit for that. I was lucky to come along at the right time to ****** it up.

The only things I've done to the car are the street wheels/tires, Recaro's, gauges, and the 'Club Sport' and Gulf stickers. As you can tell, those stickers alone are worth at least one-tenth of a second at Road America!

I put the Club Sport sticker on it since it is a club sport kind of car with it's GT engine/drivetrain (..320 rwhp), cowl induction, CS alternator, smaller starter, roll-cage, stripped-out interior, lexan rear window, rear-wiper delete, manual 'strap' windows, Bilstein suspension, sway bars, dual-disc clutch, GTS brakes, GTS mirrors, fuel-cell, wider fiberglass front fenders, flaired rear quarters, etc etc. Alright, the primary reason though is that I thought the sticker looked cool.

Samuel is correct, my car is not a factory-produced CS.

Next time drop us Wisconsin guys a line and we can all check-out Road America, Lake Street Cafe, Siebken's and Sal's in our 928's.

Hi SwayBar,

The sticker is really cool.
May it be possible to see pictures of your car?

Thanks,
Samuel

I don't have any pictures at present, but will attempt to abscond a digital camera to do so.

In David Hemmings The real 928 book it says "Introduced in 1988 only 71 were ever built." These cars came without electric windows and central locking although because they were special order quite a few owners had them added back in again. they invented an SE car for the UK market.
Does any one know how the non power windows worked? I haven't been able to see any picture of them.

Info in Hemmings book is wrong. 71 is probably typing mistake and it should really read 17 which is believed to be correct CS number for ROW market. This misses possible two '88 US CS.

Only one or few CS prototypes exist(ed) which do not have electric windows.
