The rings on which I am working are the grille retention rings that screw on to the face of the speakers. You'll notice the crack in the lower (6:30 o'clock) portion of this ring. I have super glued it back together in this photo, but it won't last much past a couple of months.

Miles, and others with later cars--
The rings that Ron's working on are the screw-on type. If my memory is correct, the rings were changed sometime in 1988 (for 1989 models for sure) to a snap-on type. Later cars use these different rings.
Check your own rings to verify that they are the screw-on type, and Ron's solution will be perfect for you.

As far back as I can remember, they've always been screw on speakers. I was unfortunate enough to have learned the hard way. I just assumed they snapped on, and thus cracked the speaker cover. Basically, it looked just like yours. I tried everything after that, including good ole superglue, but to no avail.
But I will say, that my '84 was a screw on speaker and my '95 is a screw on speaker. I think they've always been that way. But, once they break, they're done. Superglue just won't do the trick once they're cracked. Good luck, though!

Ron,
I've been looking for aluminum rings for the tweeters in the front door of my 968 ten speaker door panels. Forgive my ignorance, are the rings you guys are discussing for these same speakers? I'm assuming Porsche used the same speakers in 928's, 911's and 968's, but you know what happens when one assumes...
Thanks,

They appear to be the same speakers as our small ones in the door. I would need to measure to be certain. I will speak to the machinist tomorrow about price and time to produce these rings. You might want to check yours against one in a 928 after '85.

I spoke to my machinist friend today, and now we need a small speaker and a large speaker as a sample and a pattern from which to make a base. We'll use aluminum tubes and machine the rings on a CNC machine. I presume everyone wants black anodizing, but other colors are available. We want to make some test runs first until the learning curve levels out. We are not sure of the price, so we'll buy some materials and from that an estimate of final price will be made. We are projecting 100 each of the small and 100 each of the large rings.

Again, remember they are different for cars before MY90. That's also why they will not fit the 968, unless someone retrofitted it withi old 928 speakers...
It would be nice, though, to have a version for the later models.
And I'd even offer those through my store, if it makes sense from a cost perspective.

Any news on the speaker grill rings? I'm slowly working my way through the list of things to do on my 928 to bring it up to scratch, and the speaker grill rings are really bugging me!
