Default Exhaust Conundrum...

Ok.. so after talking and going over the goodies with my shop they inform me that it is going to be around $3500 to get my "new" 928 up to par. Most of the stuff are small maint. kinds of Items that over course of the cars life don't appear to have been done. After making a few critical decisions as to what to leave out of this repair bill I pinched my way down towards the $2500 mark. So, that said here is the deal. Starting this year the state of NC no longer requires vehicles over the age of 10yrs to have emissions inspections.. Well guess what my cat. conv. is TOAST.. YAY for the not needing it for inspection, but where do I go from here? Do I replace it? Where can I find one? Do I have it hollowed and put back up there? Do I have it removed from my car and just straight pipe it to the muffler? What kind of noise am I looking at? and the ever popular How much perf. gain/loss am I am going to deal with?

it's a '83US btw...

P.S. That rattle I heard at shutdown.. yeah.. that was the guts of my Cat clanging around in there..
