Default Wiring diagram units - diameter or area?

What units are used in describing the wires on the wiring diagrams? Are they diameters or cross-sectional areas?

Mark.... the numbers are area, in sq. mm.

And remember, the German (,) comma is their version
of "our" (.) decimal pt. So, 1,75 = 1.75 sq.mm.

G'luck.

I should mention that the wire info chart was posted here in the last couple years by someone else. That someone went through the trouble of assembing all the info for us. It is not something I found, researched or generated.
