Spent the afternoon cleaning up wiring in the 90 GT (the original owner had a 1991 era cell phone, which literally had 50 feet of wiring.....)
SO- I'm in the process of installing a CDR-220, I have the side panels off the center console, and I even took the knee pad off the lower dash, but I cannot see how to get the CD-2 out of its sleeve. The CDR-220 came with two little keys, apparently to get it out, but I can't see how to release the CD-2. Anyone got the trick?

See if the following description matches your visuals. My '91 had a CD-2 (or was it CDR-2?)....
If you remove the trim surround from the head unit - it should pop off - you will see two little holes on each side of the unit. Your 'key's' will hopefully look like 2 u-shaped wires? Stick the ends in the holes and push until you hear the unit release. Then pull.
If the above makes no sense then wait for the next post

IIRC the CD2 was an Alpine unit. You may need Alpine keys to relesae it.

Does it have the "Do It Yourself" manual transmission, or the superior "Fully Equipped by Porsche" Automatic Transmission?

Just dug out and looked at my old CD-2: There is an up/down sliding locking tab on either side of the unit (once the trim is removed.) Using a small screwdriver or pick, move the tab up or down to center it and pull that side of the unit out slightly. Repeat on the other side. Then you can pull the unit.

Dave-
Your description is perfect, I finally figured it out. Here are some shots for posterity:
Old CD-2 in situ, sort of showing release pins at each side:
Better shot of unit, pulled out 1" after release:
I installed a CDR-220, which I got from Stefan. His harness makes it truly plug and play, here is the schematic from the head unit:
And the actual physical connections, showing both parts of the adaptor harness:
And the final product, last night at 1:30 AM (Nope, not addicted......)
Now I just have to read the manual so I can figure out how to use it!
