I am planning on replacing the Alphine 7807 (30w x 4) with a Sony CDX-GT300: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-nEMvFFB...450&I=158GT300

The 89 does not have the stock amplifier. Will the Sony be enough to produce decent power or should I add an amp and keep the Alphine?

I don't particularly like the look of the Sony for a 928... but that's a personal taste question - I'd suspect the alpine 'goes' better. 17W RMS per channel is maybe OK if you don't want to have it too loud - but check if you have stock speakers (2ohms) the Sony may not like those.

If you do still have stock speakers you can probably get the best sound improvement by replacing them. You will need an amp if you want it to be loud - otherwise a 4ch powered head may be OK for you.

I have had Sony units in the past, and had problems with "all". They were all tape units, but every one failed.

I have had Alpine, and do now. I have had no troubles with any units. That goes for speakers, subs, and especially amps. My experience has been excellent all around.

My only complaint with my current Alpine, is that it only came in a silver finish when I purchased it. I don't think that any silver deck look good in any Porsche.

Alpine now has my deck in black, and I am considering buying it to get rid of silver.

BTW go for an MP3 unit, and/or aux MP3 player input (ipod).

Also make sure you have a "sub out" RCA from the unit so you are not relying on having to have a good amp to isolate the sub freq, then sending it to the sub (if you eventually go that way).

The car does have the stock speakers. I intended to replace the Alpine because the screen was shot. After driving the car for over 2 months I just discovered the DIM button, pressed it and the screen works great.

So there you go, I am keeping the Alpine and I can brag with my wife that I "fixed" another thing on the 928 :-)). Who knows, I may even get a small allowance to upgrade the speakers.

You may be able to get your manual from the alpine wesite.

It is a little tough to find, but a lot are there.

The alpine/Porsche 7807 is one of the best CD/Radio/CD changer units I have ever owned.
Has a in head CD as well as the 6 in the changer.
It can be run through the factory/aftermarket amp and has an internal amp as well.
The unit was fitted as an upgrade option the 94 & 95 GTS cars.
I have one in my GTS. Looks perfect in a 928 and was factory supplied as an option.
he 94 GTS head unit to amp wire makes it plug and play.

2nd pic: Radio is turned on but on "DSP" mode (I guess they are referring to Non-Display).

The front speakers turned out to be Boston Acoustics 704. Rear speaker (in pics) is stock. Should I have it reconed or should I upgrade to 4 ohms to match the BA704?

Stock speakers were not that good even new - look for good quality replacements that will fit (get recommedations).

It should sound much better.

I personally use Beckers only in Porsches They blend in the interior absolutely perfectly and quality of the unit itself and the sound it produces is absolutely fantastic! Not to mention the ease of use also....

Just my luck that when I eventually get round to buying a Blaupunkt they've changed their styling from subtle sophistication to garish wideboy.

However on the plus side, it has both Aux In and optional Ipod interface, and the controls are excellent. The CD MP3 player is very quick, never jumps and the radio reception seems to be very good too. I like the display too, large and clear, with backlight colour and brightness set by the user.

Best of all the sound quality is excellent and it was very cheap - about $100.


When working on the car I put on a cd rom with filled with MP3 eBooks (eg The Da Vinci Code) to listen to, or plug in my Creative Jukebox - Perfect!

In the US it seems to be known as the Monterrey MP35.

This is what i've got - Looks ugly but it has a built-in 16Gb hard drive and can rip an entire album in about 6 mins!



I would recommend one of these to anyone, I have about 250 albums saved on it and searching through the folders, finding tracks etc is very quick and easy! Also, the shuffle options are very good too!

Blaupunkt London (sorry, not the best of pics) 10 disc changer in the boot. Original porsche fitment from late '90's as far as i can tell. Looks stock anyway!
