It doesn't extend out a tray, the faceplate flips and it catches the edge of the CD (virtually) as soon as it contacts the slot and tracks it in.
I put a Denon, I think RD5S, in my old (former) '85, that looked apropose and was period-correct.

I have the CD 500 and it is a perfect fit. Nice and fush and looks like the factory unit.

I'll go ahead and add mine to the thread. I like Alpine, this one was installed by the PO and works great, though I probably wouldn't have chosen this style. Alpine CDA-9807

Nakamichi MB-VI I put in a couple of weeks ago. Has a small amplifier block on the back. You can leave it attached to the head in which case it sticks out from the dash a bit. Or, you can detach the amp and flush mount the head but you have to find a place to stick the small amp.
Not too awful but I managed to find a place to wedge the amp in and run the speaker wires back to the factory amp location so I could use the standard speaker harness.
Ran the ipod/aux cable over to the passenger side shelf.

I got my Nak MB-VI from some website, http://www.woofersetc.com/
No affiliation, never used them before 3 weeks ago. Unit was sealed in the box with a 2007 date on it.
It worked, shipped to me fast. That's about all i can say so far, it's still new.
I was going to use the CD-500 but someone posted about the MB-VI in a thread I did back in December so I switched.
Went back and forth on whether I wanted MP3 capability but decided the changer would do better.
And again, there is an amp block hidden in there somewhere. It's not necessarily pretty.

Nakamichi
Hi JayC67,
Thanks for posting the photo, I too am interested in the Nakamichi unit because of the 6-CD player in a DIN 1 unit.
I was wondering what the back of the Nakamichi MB-VI looked like and dug around on Google. Here is what I have found, is this what the amplifier block looks like on the MB-VI?
Also, I was trying to find a manual online, but not even the Nakamichi site has them, do you know where there is more information about the MB-VI unit is online?
Thanks,
Joe
