Default A GT or not GT?

The label on the door sill tells me it was built Jan 1990 but the option code label has no GT designation.

It is a 5 speed and the engine sits 300 rpm higher at 140kph compared to my S4 suggesting higher gearing.

Can I confirm its a GT from the VIN?

2:20 vs. 2:64 (or are these 2:73?) would be more than 300rpm, wouldn't it?

I assume my '88 S4 has a 2.20 diff and a GT should have 2.73 which is perhaps the 300 rpm difference; not sure hence the question.

If the build date is 1990 and it's a 5-speed, it should be a GT by default. The only real way to confirm is through the engine code - should be M28/47.

Thats what I thought also..........it has air bags, RDK and the digi dash.

Does the engine code appear in the VIN?

No it does not. From the factory that car was definately a GT - no question about that. But you want to verify the engine code to make sure the engine was not swapped for an S4 engine.

Malcolm,
When I was looking at an 88 944 Turbo S, the only real way to tell them apart was with the engine code. It was on a little metal stamp on the engine, it was a real Turbo S, but kind of rough. Not sure where the code is stamped on the 928's engine but it's probably in there somewhere.
Anyone know?

I know where it is Colin but didn't have an opportunity to write it down; the cars owner is a firefighter and he got called out when I was looking at the car............600km round trip and he has to leave.........Murphys law I guess.

The euro S4 automatics of '87 and '88 had the 2.54 rear end, not 2.20 like we know the US S4s to have. In '89 the US and euro both had 2.54.
You should have more rpm difference I think if you had a 2.20 car.
