Hey gang,
I just scored some 17" factory Cup 2's wheels and I'm trying to decide which wheel set to keep on my '85 S.
Here's the dealio on the wheels/tires:
18" Mille Miglia Turbo Twists
Ft: 18 x 8 1/2", offset of 52: 225/40 ZR18
RR: 18 x 10", offset of 65: 265/35 ZR18
17" Factory Cup 2's (from a '97 993)
Ft: 17 x 7 ET 55 - 993.362124.00
RR: 17 x 9 ET 55 - 993.362128.00
Now here's where the controversy comes in. Both wheels sets are in roughly the same condition, with both needing some light sanding and a spray (or powder coating).
18" Pro's: Look awesome on the car. Fill out the wheel wells nicely. Wider then the Cup 2's. Already installed with good Pirelli P7000's tires on them.
18" Cons: front 8.5" wheels stick out quite a bit with the 52 mm offset. And the tires look like they are almost too small for the wheel. It looks to me like I should have a wider tire on the front, but I don't think I have any more room up there for a wider tire. Also the 18's have got to be quite a bit heavier then the Cup 2's. I haven't wieghed them, but the Cup 2's are so light its unbelievable.
17" Pros: Look awesome on the car. They are light as hell! Holy cow, they are light! They MAY fit up front better and allow a more "normal" tire size up there (a tire that doesn't look too small for the wheel).
17" Cons: They MAY not fill up the wheel wells as nicely as the 18's. No tires included (not a biggie, but it is a factor - especially since I can't mount them up to compare). Overall, they are not as wide as the 18's, so I would give up a bit of look and perhaps a tiny bit of grip there (?).
Here are some pics of the 18's mounted up front so you can get an idea of what I was saying about the front tire seeming to be too thin for the wheel.

Here's a pic of one of the Cup 2's:
So, any thoughts on which wheel set to go with?
Does anyone have the same size 17's on an '85? If so, what size tires are you running? How do they fill out the wheel wells? And how about some pics? Post em if you got em.
How about the 18's? Is anyone running that same size? If so, same deal, what size tires are you running, and post any pics if you got em.
Thanks,
Ed
ps: Whew! What a ball buster. Had to key this in 3 times now with my browser going haywire.

I've had the MM wheels on my pervious 928, and one thing I can tell you is they are not very sturdy. At one point, I developed a small leak and at the tire shop, they looked closer, and realized that the wheel had a slight bend. I'm very cautious when I park, so personally, I would never purchase another set. My advice is to stick with factory wheels
BTW....I like the turbo twists better
