Suspension swap

What parts do I need to swap an 86 ½ to an 82? I have access to an 86 ½ car. What parts are interchangeable? Do I need to do the lower control arms, shocks, spindles, cross member and all the rear stuff. A complete list would be helpful if anyone has done this. It seams this is the route to go for the S4 brakes instead of early spindles with adapters.
Thanks Brad

The whole front end can be swapped - and take it all! Spindles, drop links, upper and lower 'A'/control arms, ball joints & eccentrics, tie rod assemblies and rack stops ( or xfer the whole rack). That should do, unless I overlooked something ... like the fender braces that are angled to take the brake cooling ducts ( take those too )
You do not need the cross member unless you plan to upgrade to the hydraulic motor mounts - I have found the old style solids with the mini shocks to be trouble free.
In the rear, you just need some spacers to center the S4 caliper over the S4 rotor AFAIK.

Thats what I had in mind. Is the lower ball joint the same for these years? I just replaced both on the 82.

Lower ball joint is very different on the 86.5. For reference, the 86.5 bolts to the LCA with the treads pointing down, threads up on the <86 cars.

Brad, are you going to do this at Roger's or in your shop. This would be a good GTG project. Keep us posted.

John I am thinking we will do it at Rogers. I also want to put my front and rear sway bars on the same weekend. I need to get a shopping list and do some maintnance while we are there, like upper controll arm bushings and stuff like that.
BTW We have a good looking door for the step-son.....

Brad,
Roger sent me a post on that. When I saw your post, I realized that I had misunderstood his e-mail to me. I thought he was asking if I wanted the whole car. I'll try to take a look at the doors this weekend. LOL

Feeding Frenzy - the engine and gearbox are spoken for.

Brad - I did this very same upgrade I did on my '82 that had 'S' style brakes. One thing that was not mentioned is the flexible brake lines to the new calipers. You can use your existing rear flexible brake lines as they will mate directly into the new caliper. On the fronts you may have 2 options. Option 1 is to purchase the S4 style flexible line that will have the banjo style connection to the front caliper (this is the option I chose on my upgrade). Option 2 would be to use your existing flexible line as there are also female threads in the front calipers (at least on my '86.5 calipers) that will accept the 'S' style flexible brake line. If you don't know how old your existing flexible brake lines are I would replace them all anyway. Also, if you are thinking about replacing the pressure seals in the '86.5 calipers StopTech sells single peice seals. I was not able to find a manufacturer for the '86.5 type scraper ring/dust shields so I just reused the originals. Good luck! It is a great upgrade if you are thinking of tracking your car at all.
