Default Flexplate release: worlds smallest sawzall strikes again ...

I'm baby sitting an '87 S4 auto for a few weeks - clearing up a few issues for the owner: on the PM side, flexplate release and crankshaft end float measure was on the agenda - but when the rear tray was dropped to reveal the Y-pipe to header studs ( corroded solid), it was either get in a cutting torch or revisit the thread on the worlds smallest sawzall .
All in all, it took about an hour to chew through the back bolts on the lower bell housing cover, measure and release the flexplate, and measure the crank end float.
After retourquing the pinch bolt, the spline/coupling was given a shot of paint ( to visually indicate any future movement) and buttoned up. This was the first such visit on this engine in 20 years: float was 0.15mm (0.006") and the flex plate released 2.8mm .... on a car with 109KKm (65K miles) - another healthy S4 engine ...

Thanks for your write-up on that Garth.

2.0 - 2.5mm.

10 minutes a bolt for me. Prison should be a breeze!

Cheers,
Michael
