Sorry to hear about your mishap... I know the bad shocks can be a pain in the.... head. i've had some acounters with it while under the hood. You'll probably gonna replace em now as they're probably shot. But just a tip for others; the shocks from the hatch are most likely the first to be replaced as they are used more. Don't throw the old ones away. Use only one to exchange with one of the front shocks. It'll work like new.
One other thing in case you might forget; disconnect your groundcable before starting to weld. The high currents can and will kill vitall parts. Probably no need to disconnect the computers, but I would do it anyways....
If spotwelding doesn't work, drill out the spotwelds from the hinge with a bigger hole and have em welded in while in place. Looks nicer than welding the edges.

Sorry to hear about your mishap, and all the hassle that you'll have to go through to get it fixed properly.
-There is a kit to install "scissor" doors on a 928; Has anyone ever found a kit for a front-hinge hood? This is an idea that I think should be mandatory for all cars from the factory. We don't have suicide doors; why do we have "suicide" hoods?

> since the hood is off, probably a good time to pull the motor, and do an OH, eh?
A data point: I was curious if the motor could be pulled with the hood still on, so I just tried it and had no problem.
