Default A Little Tach Vodoo on my 87 S4

The 86 1/2 and newer 928's have dual distributors, so when you want to add a tach device for an 8 cylinder, the output actually sends 4 cylinder information (the 928 Tach is a 4 cylinder tach). In my Chevy engined 928 this was a problem... as the reading would be double. Enter a new $80.00 device from Dakota Digital. I ordered a SGI-8 Tach Signal Calibrator from them (www.dakotadigital.com) which solved the problem... this device allows a large variety of inputs and outputs.

Another part of the Vodoo is that it must be some sort of secret exactly what wire is the one that connects the tach, as it's taken 2 years to figure this one out, and Renegade was no help. This morning after 4 hours of experimenting ($$$) my mechanic found the white and blue wire under teh dash was the tach lead. Now you'll know two of the longest running secrets out - the DaVinci Code and what wire is the tach lead.

When I installed the 84 Euro S engine in my 1980 928, the tach would read 1/2 actual RPM's. 84-85 Euro S engines also have a dual distributor. Kinda strange to have to think of 3000rpm as redline. I sent my tach to Palo Alto Speedometer, they re-calibrated it to double the signal being received.

I remember at the time wondering about a device like this. Good to know that it exists and can be used.

i hope thats a note of approval, i love the compressed scale 0-2000 and white needles of these racetech gauges the guys at raceparts uk who make them were really helpful, re-calibrating from 8 to 4 cylinder and posting it back out to me for no cost. its one of the few tachos that only read to 7k, most go to 8k and you dont need the extra thousand in a stock 928 so you loose some of the sweep.
