928 PPI in Chicago?
Any recommendations for a pre-purchase inspection in the Chicago (close to downtown) area? I may be needing to have one done in Sept. on a '91GT. Thanks in advance.

I dont know any shops close to the loop, but you can take her out to:
H & M Autohaus
708-344-9311
10321 W Roosevelt Rd
Westchester IL 60154
They did some work on my 928. Pretty friendly, sometimes treated me like I didn't know nothin about 928's, but hey, i'm only 21.
OR
Midwest Eurosport
630-595-5577
104 W Irving Park Rd
Bensenville IL 60106-2110
They know porsche, they live and breathe it. BUT they are 911 guys, so what does that mean? they will find everything little thing wrong with the 928, but will also try to convince you not to buy it and get a 911. They inspected my 928 after I bought it and created a whole list for me. That list is how I knew exaclty what to fix! They told me to dump mine, but I forged on.

Vaia Auto 844 Lake in Chicago is an option. Ron Vaia is fairly familiar with 928s and a former owner of one, and will give you a list of all the things that are a problem and a compression test, it was $155 several years ago. however, after taking my car there a few times, I didn't get a warm fuzzy. He wasn't familiar with the thrust bearing issue, and put the wrong weight oil and wrong filter on the car. Like Midwest he'll try to talk you out of the 928, but I think that to him it was just a car that gave him a lot of problems, not a good sign in your mechanic. But it's definitely close. Midwest is indeed a 911 and 944 shop, but is walking distance from the Metra.
I've heard that Fischer Motors in Barrington is pretty good, my friend has seen several 928's there, but don't know how well they know them.

I always feel that way when I go the that shop. Manfred (the owner) is just that way...maybe its the thick German accent.
But they do know what they're doing and they seem pretty honest. I've gone through several mechanics in the Chicagoland area and some were not as honest. One shop (Helmut & Vito in Downers Grove) broke my dad's windshield while installing a wiper. Apparently, the "mechanic" was using a hammer and missed!!! "Oh no, it was like that when we received the car"...he finally fessed up.
The same bastards drove my car into the lift damaging my lower spoiler. Unfortunately, I didn't see the damage until a few days later...and of course "Oh no, it was like that when we received the car" There was yellow paint on the spoiler which matched the fresh yellow paint that was used on the lift.

That reminds me, when i first started fixin my shark (years ago), it was you Roger that PM'd me with words of encouragement when I was feeling down after getting the 'list' from Midwest Euro. Thanks for everything! Its amazing how much I have learned and accomplished with the help of rennlist! Like someone else said on another thread, I can't imagine owning my shark with rennlist. It would be a cold and lonely place....
