Unless pressing down hard will engage the inner part, all thats left is a drill - BTDT. Smallest hole that will take a strong enough piece of wire (3/32? piano wire) - about 1/4-3/8" in from the edge, near the grip, in line with the axis of the cap. The wire will engage in some indentations in the inner and should enable you to pick it up enough to undo it. After that, I would dismantle and re-key so it the same as the ignition key - if you havent got that you dont need fuel! If you have another cap you can dismantle , you can see whats under the outer - takes 4 hands, several thin but strong blades and lots of coarse unprintable language.

H, had almost the same problem, lock was broken.
If yo drill a hole in exactly the right place on the face of the lock, screw in a self tapping screw, and turn the cap, it will come off.

At least on mine it did : (usual disclaimers ,etc, )

If it doesn't work, ship the shark down here, I'll remove the cap and send it back - the cap that is!

Did you get some other folks to try their keys?

I have a spare cap from an '83 which my '81 key just happened to fit. I reckon the caps don't have as many pins.

Otherwise, hook up a rig so you can use a hammer drill to turn the cap to knock it loose.

This may sound strange, but do you really want any sparks around the fuel inlet? I know there is an inner blocking plate, but there must be fumes in that tube. I would be careful with a drill. If you don't penetrate the inner seal of the cap, I guess it would be OK.

hARD TIME VISUALIZING WHICH PART? The 4 hands, blades etc? or drilling the hole? If the hole, note the blurred mark above the 'handle' in the pic above - drill a hole about there, maybe closer to the edge,( ONLY THROUGH THE RED PART!!) to suit a long screw or piece of wire (hard, not soft). Push the wire or screw in until it bottoms on the surface of the inner white part, and this should lock the inner and outer together enough to unscrew the whole unit....I will see if I have a dismantled cap I can take some pics of and post them

You don't have one of those little red master keys? They seem to fit most petrol caps.

I can lock and unlock my gas cap with the key but I recently found out that if I turn it clockwise so it clicks a few times (supposed to be closed), I can then just unscrew it off - with out the key. It locks but doesn't lock. Have you tried just to unscrew it?
