for the speedo check the connector in the spare tire compartment. check the wiring diagrams and on of those wires is from the sensor from the speedometer. a lot of times when the speedometer doesnt work or works sometimes it is this connector.

I'm in the process of tracking this down myself and just haven't had time to go the last step.. If cleaning the connectors doesn't work, you can jack the car up with the rear wheels off the ground and use a multimeter and see if the sending unit on the differential case is going from small resistance to infinite resistance as you slowly turn the rear wheel. Don't run the engine, just turn the wheel.

The connector that feeds this signal to the speedometer is the closest one toward the steering wheel on the left lower instrument panel plug.

This is where I am currently. I need to check continuity from the rear of the car to the connector.

I've had the speedometer rebuilt and tested in the instrument panel, so I know everything is good there. The problem is somewere leading to the panel - wiring between the back and the plug - bad sending unit in the transmission - I hope it is just the sending unit, but I believe mine is okay, it passed the resistance check.

Good luck and let me know how it turns out.

Ok just to clearify, this is the plug located almost under the speedo and is the contact closest to the steering column... yes im dense

Yes, there are two connectors feeding signal to the instrument cluster on either side of the steering column. The one that feeds the left side of the cluster is on the left near the door and on that connector, the one nearest the steering column feeds the speedometer.

I'm equally dense, everything is a mystery the first (or seocnd) time.

Hey Rod,
Your info helped fix this issue. I had super glue goo on the connection under the dash on that connector and pin you told me about..... now all my (knock Knock) instruments work!
