Thanks Brad. Others have emailed similar comments. I was hoping it could be replaced under warranty, but there's damage to the inside of the sidewall consistent with impact damage. At least that's what my local shop told me when they took it off and they didn't sell me the original tire or its replacement (those came from TireRack), so they didn't have any reason to be biased - and that's what TireRack is saying as well.

Here are some pictures of the inside. You can see the main split parallel to the sidewall that's about 2-3 inches long, along with another spot that's more of a puncture. I'm told this is consistent with an impact, whereas manufacturing defects typically occur along a joint that is perpendicular across the sidewall. If you or anyone else has reason to believe this is a defect, I'd appreciate your thoughts.

I've already argued the point that the rim is not bent...

Well they look like they could be about the with of a curb apart, but then it would be across the tire. I would also expect to see rim damage.
BUT I have never in my 25 years as a mechanic blamed a impact as the cause for a bulge. I have see those type of imperfections but they are more common on the turing michelin tires.
You can normally see that hard of an impact damage also on the outside.
If I had sold you those I would give you 70% back on a new tire, and the manufacture would give me a new one at no cost.
Always been that way.

BTW I think I need some new tires, these only lasted 5000 kilometers

Those don't look like the right center caps for those wheels. They look like the concave Boxster/996 style center cap. Might just be a trick of the light. Here are the center caps on my '94 GTS, they are factory and they are not painted I don't think...it looks more like Cloisonette (sic).

I LOVE grand prix white, what a beautiful machine. It's always been one of my favorite 928 colors.
