Shock Replacement Question
I am installing the externally adjustable Koni's and I am wondering if it is easier to tighten down the top nut on the shock when the shocks are installed? I have the nut on I just don't how to keep the whole shaft from turning while attempting to tighten the nut. Any BTDT's??

What Malcolm said...
You have a target compression on the rubber grommet, and use the "donut" look to decide when tight is tight. The instructions should give ypu a clue about how big the donut should be at the correct compression.

These are the externally adjustable so the end of the shaft is the adjuster.
Dr. Bob & Malcolm,
I am using Carl's new super duper nubbers and they don't compress without mucho pressure. I didn't see anything about a donut in the instructions. I will try air.
I had a coupl eof suggestions to grip the shaft real high with vice grips but with Carls nubbers you cant get the dust sleeve out of the way to do this.

The "donut" is the shape the the rubber grommet assumes as it is compressed.
AFA grabbing the shaft with vise-grips, you probably want to avoid that on the new shocks. Vise-grips leave gouges in the metal shaft. At extreme full compression, the gouges will damage the top seal and your shocks will be instant junk.

A quick follow up- DR nailed the problem right away, Koni sent the wrong nuts. When customizing the shock to the externally adjustable they don't use the same rod stock but often send the stock nuts. Went out and found some
12mmX1.25 pitch today and they went on like butter.
Dr Bob- I would have grabbed the rod above the dust cap
Interesting how much lower the perch is on the Koni's (6" +/-) AND the springs are shorter.
