The core itself very rarely fails - why does it need replacing?
A good pre owned core is relatively cheap getting in there to replace it is fairly major work but doable.

What Roger said.

Most leaks that show up with sniffers in the airbox are from freon escaping at the expansion valve and blowing down into the evaporator box. Could be the expansion valve, or it could be the o-ring seals where the expansion valve fits between the two steel lines and the top of the evaporator. Either leak will allow freon to fall down into the air box and out through the vents, mimicking a leakey evaporator.

I own the 928 with the most problems ever. I had a leaky evaporator, it was REALLY really gunky with compressor oil and dirt.

Gotta pull the dash and the console to do it. Lotsa labor just to get in there.
